Aftermarket Rotors and Pad Replacement Experience

I decided to move forward with replacing my brakes with a set of Brakenetic drilled and slotted rotors with a set of Posi-Quiet Semi-Metallic pads. I had the guys at AutoSportsystemGroup (ASG) install them. If anyone is looking for a great Porsche shop in NorthernVA, I highly recommend these guys located in Merrifield, VA.

The front rotors and pads installed without an issue. The back rotors, however, did not fit properly in the sense that the rotor would not sit flush against the wheel hub. There was about 1/8" gap when we place the rotor on and when we compared the Brakenetic rotor with the OEM they pulled off my car, everything looked exactly like the OEM except for where the rotor was machined out for the parking brake shoe. Based on the naked eye assessment, I am guessing the rotors were not machined out deep enough to fit the parking brake shoe.

The guys installed the new pads and put my original rotors back on the rear. Brakenetic uses Centric rotor blanks and then drills, slots, and zinc coats them. So if there is a manufacturing issue here, then the problem isn't with Brakenetic. I shipped back the rear rotors to have the guys at Brakenetic take a look and compare the set they sent me with another set they have in inventory. I'm hoping I might have just got a bad set or perhaps the wrong set for my car. Otherwise I'm on the hunt for another manufacture to replace my rear rotors. I was hoping to have a set of matching drilled and slotted rotors but I haven't seen any other manufactures offer that for the Panameras.

These were for my 11' 4S. I'll update everyone once Brakenetic gets back to me after their assessment of the rear rotors.

I looked at some alternatives that were recommended here on the forum, but ultimately I was lazy and just went with OEM. A full set on the Turbo is not cheap -- all due to the front rotors.

I have 33K miles on my Turbo and a local shop is telling me I don't need new rotors yet and to save my money....he said they can grind them down a little. I thought you can't do that to these rotors...does anyone know if I should let them do this?

You're going to hear both sides of that argument. Some folks are adamant that you can't turn drilled/spotted rotors, others say that right machinist can turn anything with success.

The thought of getting after market brakes and rotors is appealing to me given the cost of the oem stuff.. But the hassle and unknowns associated with going route is also off putting. I'll be on the lookout for any updates.. Thanks for sharing..

I have had luck with Zimmerman and EBC rotors. BOSCH are great rotors but I could not find rotors in a quick search.

So I called Brakenetic today to get their assessment of my rear rotors. They are working with another supplier to try a different set as the other rotors they had in inventory were identical to the ones shipped to me. I wasn't able to find out who their other supply is but they said it will take about 10 days to get them in and have them shipped out.

In looking at other options that offer the cross-drilled and slotted rotor option, I noticed CQuence makes a very cheap option for the Panameras. They only charge a little over $85 a rotor for the rears and the rotors are zinc coated as well. I think they manufacture them in house vs buying blanks but I don't know that for sure. Has anyone else used them?

Yikes, $85? That's a steal if they are quality.

I sent an email to CQuence regards to the front rotors because all I could find were the rears. Here is their reply with pricing:

Hello,
It looks like the front rotors only come in a premium grade option and are pre-slotted just like the OE rotors on your vehicle. Here is information about our premium rotors:

The Premium rotors are of higher build quality, utilizing split casting used in O.E. manufactures to help dissipate heat more efficiently by providing better stopping power, mill balanced which reduces pedal feedback associated with vibration for smoother powerful stops, double ground finish ensures parallelism and black E-coating finish that has been tested to withstand 400 hours of salt spray without corroding.

Premium brake rotors are also further balanced and have a disc thickness variation (DTV) tolerance within fifty thousandths of an inch. This means that these rotors spin truer; braking will be easier and stops will be smoother with reduced pedal vibration. Furthermore, premium cast rotors are a higher grade cast iron (G3500). This means that compared to standard rotors, the material used for premium rotors is harder and can handle more stress.

The front premium rotors cost $894.44 per rotor and after the discount will bring it down to $805 per rotor. Please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns and we’ll be happy to help.

Thank you,
Cquence Motorsports Team

Might as well just go with OEM at that price.
