Panamera GTS as a daily driver?
Panamera GTS as a daily driver?
Ive been set to finding a private party low mileage panamera turbo but to no avail the past several months. Recently I have been watching and reading up more on the GTS and it might not be a bad option to start looking for that as well. I have yet to see a bad review of the car.
I dont necessarily need the 'fastest' car out there - but I do want a smooth, quiet ride (majority of driving is highway).
I have never test driven a GTS, but drove my friends turbo quite a few times. I do like the turbo a LOT but feel like its missing a bit of 'soul' that the GTS might have. The only thing I do not want to compromise much on is the car being on the 'edge' at all times (as some 911s can be), or straying to far away from good daily usability and interstate long distance trips.
What say you panamera-ists who made the decision of one over the other? Who has had both with a recommendation of which one they liked more?
There are also other pros to the GTS over the turbo that I like such as the slightly louder exhaust, exterior looks, and better resale value.
Were there any major upgrades to the car in 2014 over 2013?
They are roughly (used) in the same ballpark price wise, so automatically my brain just goes to 'oh just get the best one there is (panamera turbo)'...but is that faulty thinking as the GTS offers an altogether different driving experience?

My friend Jeff hopefully will chime in here as he owned a GTS. IMO the GTS has a certain panache and when optioned a certain way it offers a special level of aesthetics. (carmine int. package, carbon trim, etc.)
You are correct about pricing GTS vs Turbo, they are in the same ballapark. Both are terrific and I suggest driving the GTS then making your decision. The 14 updates are mostly aesthetic: bumpers, headlights/tailights) Both are great daily drivers.

I had the same decision 6months ago and went for the GTS.
I love the PTT and the speed, but after driving both for a full day rather than around the block from the dealer, I actually thought that the GTS is the faster car in low rev driving. The turbo always seem to need some revs before becoming (ungodly) fast, the GTS was immediately ready to jump.
Phenomenal daily driver, quiet, composed, relaxing when needed (I.e. Morning traffic), but a beast whenever needed.
Look and feel are the same for me as the PTT, resale value maybe a bit better percentage wise then PTT as repairs/maintenance is possibly a bit lower (though still Porsche high).
You can't go wrong with either one, both are sensational cars and a beast on the track....

I'm looking to make a switch myself in another month and have driven both. Since you are looking for a daily driver like I am, the GTS is the best hands down. That vehicle has a Jekyll and Hyde personality, it can be really smooth when you need it to be and go crazy instantaneously.
The Turbo is an amazing vehicle as well with a lot of power but in my opinion its tamed way too much and you will have to get it outfitted if you dont get the sports exhaust option. It reminds me of the Benz S600, plenty of power but geared more towards comfort.
And all GTS vehicles I have come across are pretty loaded to the teeth with options. I also looked up maintenance costs for the GTS vs Turbo from my Porsche Indy Mechanic not the stealership and its comparable to the S and 4S models which makes grin from ear to ear being an S owner with minimal problems.
The body kit is better than the Turbo as well. My vote is the GTS.

This here is a good thread and good discussion on two great cars. I actually ordered a Panny GTS a couple years ago, ended up waiting, then spur decision bought a 2014 PTT the same weekend my GTS came in. My main reason was: above 100 mph, the GTS doesn't have near the punch that the turbo does. My summation:
GTS: The car is simply fun as Hell. The throttle response, the 440 hp (or 430 if you go 2013 model), and that suspension, and the AWD. That car was just bad-*ss. Winding the engine up with that exhaust, the GTS lettering on the seats (I preferred silver lettering with Alcantara), and the steering feel were magnificent. The reason every car review loves that car is because it is tuned perfectly. It probably could use another 30 hp or so (and you may get that with the new models due out), but other than that, the car made me laugh it was so fun. It definitely had a more aggressive air suspension tune than the turbo.
Turbo: That's a car that can scare the living s*hit out of you with its power and torque. When I had mine, we drove down to Nashville with a couple friends and the car was just scary fast. It could dust just about anything and that includes a Corvette, an M3/M4, etc. I had a 2014- the thing was a marvel. You can feel the power difference from the GTS, it is very noticeable. Where the Turbo fails in my mind, is in the steering and the suspension tune. It was marketed as more of a cruiser and even B Hartley says that in a track comparison with the GTS. The turbo is more of a GT car and the GTS is also made for track. The suspension in the turbo always felt a bit floaty to me and I nearly always drove it in sport plus suspension setting to get the most response out of it.
To me, the GTS was the closest to a 4-door 9114S or 911 S that could you get. I've heard the Turbo described as 'a Madman in a Tuxedo'...which is accurate.

In theory - I agree 110% that past 100 gts has nowhere the punch of turbo - but in all civilian land there are hardly many instances I'd be able to do that!!
I drove a turbo several times (close to 1.5 years ago) - and it is a great car but still do wonder if to sacrifice some of that speed lunacy for steering and more road feel. The turbo IS a great cruiser, and I find it somewhat floaty and 'numb' (without starting to mess with modifications).
My main thing is I dont want the car to be too noisy for daily commutes - and comfortable for freeway driving. I had a 997 years back (carrera, non s) - and definitely did not find that car 'great' for the mentioned tasks (but great for short spirited runs). I know were comparing completely different cars - but I dont like a 'ride' that's overly busy as well.
Gotta find my way to test drive a GTS up at the dealer sometime soon. But my apprehensions always come in the fact that a 5-10 minute test drive is far below enough to get an accurate perception of how the vehicle will be under many daily conditions. And the fact that your emotions are flooded with a 'new' car experience - I'm sure I would find a new ALTIMA thrilling the first time I take it around the block, flooring it all the way down. OK I kid, I kid!! But you get the point...

I had the opportunity to drive the GTS at Monticello racetrack during a Porsche event, where quite a few Pcars were available to "try out", although the GTS was the only Panny. My daily driver was the Panny Hybrid. Needless to say there was no comparison between the two both in power and handling. I did a test drive shortly thereafter at the dealer. I would have liked to keep it out for a longer trial, but you know how that goes, not possible. I decided to take the plunge and order the GTS. It is mostly my daily but in convertable weather, the 996 becomes my daily. The GTS is a super car, fast, agile, comfortable and reasonably fuel efficient. I love the exhaust note which always turns heads. I am still in the brake-in period, so I haven't tried to open it up yet, soon. I have never driven a Panny Turbo but my 996 turbo conversion is very fast, faster then the GTS. Aside from the speed, I prefer the GTS.

I've got a '13 GTS and can say it's hands down the best car I've ever owned and arguably the best I've ever ridden in. It's a great daily and actually does about the same as my wife's minivan on gas fwiw. My family loves riding in it except when I can't resist the temptation to throw them around in it a bit. The hardest thing about daily driving the GTS is not unleashing the beast within the GTS and keeping the caveman in me from coming out. Happy hunting.
Driving everyday 100 mile back and forth from work with my 2103 GTS. Comfortable and the performance and look that you need it. Better gas mileage than my X6M. Love it everyday beside color black is so hard to care
I have a 2013 GTS and it is an incredible car. I have never driven a turbo so can't give a direct comparison but suppose that you would not go wrong with either car. I do like that the GTS is lower, I always leave it in the lowest height setting. On the other hand I drive it in the comfort gearing mode. And with the muffler set to sport (of course!)
Starting the GTS is always a pleasure!
It is a comfortable car to drive distances. The seats are awesome.
