After watching a good video on it I decided to add a screen to my grill, a couple differences between my car and the video, mines 2010 4S and I have ACC.
the shape of the grill on the 2010 4S kind of makes doing an outside grill less than desirable (would look terrible) so the bumper has to come off, perfect time to clean out the leaves I forgot when I changed the air filter earlier
I bought some aluminum grill from amazon for $17 https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and some rubber edging for $12 https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
the bumper is relatively easy to take off (in my spacious garage), there are some good videos on it out there
s sample of exactly why I wanted to add the screen, that is a hard rock hit, that could have holed something
on my car there are these air guide on either side of the central inlet to redirect air to the radiators, they need to come off in order to fit the screen, a couple of screwdrivers did the trick prying up the tabs
I trimmed the screen to the exact size under the air guides, there is a nice small shelf that will support/lock in the screen when the guide are put back.
I put some rubber door trim/edging on the rest just to clean it up a bit
finished screen install, I used a couple of zip ties to to hold the rest inplace
finished, bumper back in place, reinstalling the bumper is actually trickier than removing it, lots of little places that need to line up perfectly
Thanks DogWood, hope it's ok to supplement your DIY when it comes to removing the bumper.
I removed my front bumper also not too long ago, to better secure the splitter on mine. I also bought some black steel roof gutter guards from home depot, but was in a hurry and never got to install them.
Just something worth noting, not much slack for the side bumper light wiring, the main electrical harness, and headlight washer hose.
At first I was like WTH, how am I suppose to reach in and disconnect these
Like you mentioned, removing the bumper is fairly easy with these things disconnected prior to any movement and pulling the bumper forward.
1) You should be able to disconnect the harnesses (2)two on each side from the wheel well plastic liner without the need of pulling the bumper forward. One harness is directly on the side bumper lights, the other harness for the rest of the electrical things is slighty up in the fender. My apologies and didn't really take pictures.
2) For the washer hose, on the passenger side when you remove the headlight. You can dislodge the hose from this location that can free up some slack to allow you to pull the bumper slightly forward. You then, should be able to reach in and unclamp the hose from the connection ...right behind the sprayer.
Nice! Thanks for sharing the pointers. I thought of doing this while the bumper was off but ended up just slapping the bumper back on after cleaning up the accumulated debris.
Well, I finally got around to doing this mod. Ordered the grille mesh and edge trim years ago and has been sitting in my garage ever since. Timed it with an air filter change as taking off the bumper is a PITA! Vacuumed the rads. Took apart and cleaned the plastic front grille and then rejuvenated the black plastic with Solution Finish. Finally, made a custom grille mesh for the centre and the 2 sides. Looks so clean when done from the rear of the bumper! Thanks for your DIY as I found it helpful!
