What do you mean I have Porsche Sport Exhaust? WTF??
Have a 2014 4S Launch Edition. Very unique aesthetic (Agate Grey + 2-tone full leather cream/Agate interior) and nicely optioned. Notably missing Porsche Sport Exhaust (PSE) though! Bought it almost 4 years ago at 21 000km (13 000 miles). Like it now as much as when I 1st got it!
The 3.0L V6 TT in this 970.2 is a beast but very refined. Exhaust is polished and muted. Always wished I could make it growl more and wished that it had been spec’d with Porsche Sport Exhaust (PSE)! Recently I’d been eyeing aftermarket exhausts for this reason.
Took my car to the dealer the other day for another reason. While there, I asked the SA to get me a quote for a PSE retrofit just so that I could compare with the other A/M options. SA tells me it’s stupid expensive and probably around $8K (CDN)!
Get a call later that day...SA tells me that my car already had PSE but is just missing the console button! WTF??! Launch cars are built
by Porsche (not ordered by dealers) as showroom cars (not demos) and builds can be unique. $750 installed for console button and module to activate PSE. Asks if I want to proceed!! Heck yes!! Crazy! Who puts in PSE and then “hides” it?!
Wish I knew this 4 years ago...I could have been growling for a long time. Oh well, I’m smiling from ear-to-ear now!
I have a '17 Turbo with no sports exhaust. I think the standard and sport rear mufflers are almost the same. The inner outlets on my mufflers has a butterfly valve. Why? My guess is that it is used to "control" exhaust sound. Mine is always open. I think the "sport" position on the sport muffler has this butterfly closed forcing all gas through the less restrictive (louder) exhaust port. When the sport button is pushed "closed" the butterfly valve appears to "open" causing exhaust to run through both the restrictive and less restrictive sections. What this means is that with the sport button "on" you have a bit more noise, but overall a bit more exhaust restriction (less power).
Service Advisor I dealt with has been with Porsche for 20 years. Told me he’s never come across another car fitted with a sport exhaust that wasn’t activated. Postulates that because car was built by Porsche as a launch vehicle must have wanted the aesthetic of the PSE tail pipes. Therefore exhaust was installed but not set up. Needed console button and coding. Thankfully butterfly valves were fully operational (not seized) despite lack of use for six (!) years.
I’ve noticed a dramatic difference in the tone and texture of the exhaust. Ambiance in the cabin is also different. Think that the car must have the sound symposer as I can hear and feel the difference in the cabin. My seat back has a slight “rumble” when the exhaust is singing!
Overall very pleased. Not in your face loud like a muscle car but it definitely announces the presence of the car. Wish I had found this “gift” years ago!
