Those are the small things, that always bug me. This time, few weeks ago I noticed that the passenger side door mirror was not acting right. On debug, I discovered one of the two motors was acting up.
The housing has 2 motors, and the combination of their movements, can move the mirror left, right, up or down, or combination of these directions.
Before you replace, you can do a swap, putting the 'bad' motor onto the other mirror, and the 'good' motor onto the 'bad' mirror. This way, you can exclude the door switch, or some controller logic, from the equation. Once you swap the motors, you will definitely see if you can adjust the original (suspect bad) motor on the new location, and if the newly swapped (assumed good) motor is adjustable on the suspect location.
Once they are swapped, try to adjust the mirrors in every direction, up, down, left, right. This will tell you exactly what is not working right. Removal is only few minutes on each side, so if you are trying to save money, this could be your ticket.
If you do have a bad motor on passenger side (the side which is most often adjusted due to reverse function which changes the mirror to show you curbs, etc.), you can simply leave them swapped, as doing so, will likely give you fully working motor on passenger side, and the motor which is not working, will be on driver side, the side which is typically adjusted once and left there for a long time. In this case, you can adjust with hands, and you are done.
In my case, those little quirks bother me, so I decided to buy a new motor for replacement. There are few things you need to know about the motor before you order it. Also, some pics and steps are listed below.
The motor, shipped, cost me about $120. So fix is not terrible, and very easy to do.
Hope this helps.
TOOLS:
- Plastic trim prying tool
- 1/4" wrench
- Extension for the wrench
- T10 Torx driver
- Shop towel and glass cleaner to clean mirror up after everything is fixed
Now, onto the process. Follow each pic in sequence. Look it all over before you start. Understanding the whole process is always a method to success without breaking anything.
Hello Ciaka,
Great resource for this mirror motor replacement. I wanted to check with you if you have the directions on how to replace the mirror housing. The motor and mirror in my case still works properly and undamaged. I believe there is the main housing and a lower cover. Are they only held together by the plastic tabs? Appreciate your help.
Thanks,
Severo
Thanks Ciaka! I saw this during my search too. I should have been more specific that I'm looking for directions for the 970.2 model Panny. I suppose the steps are going to be similar. Hopefully, this provides a good starting point. Best Regards.
