On the freeway, past 50 mph massive cabin vibration. Wheels are balanced (oem 20's) not sure if it's the alignment but the vibration is not present all the time. Driveshaft?

Yes. Either: drive shaft, alignment or wheel balancing.

It could also be all combined like in my case.

Typically the Cardan Shaft (driveshaft) will be more of a 'thumping' sound heard center of the car; like its coming from the center console. Its more predominant under acceleration as well.
This is usually a wheel balance or alignment issue. Although my S320 had this issue as the tires were old and they'd split around the circumference of the tire - was weird.

 

That's what I figured... thought it was probably driveshaft. Yea the arm rest/center console have severe vibration during acceleration.

Rob you're saying a wheel balance/alignment can cause this? It really felt like a lot more than that, but above 50mph or during acceleration is when it happened, so I guess it could be balance/align..

Happened right after I punched it getting onto the freeway on a round about onramp immediately coming off the turn.. I'm guessing you guys are spot on. Is this an expensive fix?

drive shaft = expensive

 

Cardan Shaft from VertexAuto is $ 389 (minus core); Just find a good Indy to install since you have to drop the exhaust. These are actually 'balanced' driveshafts; dealer, not so much...
The only item that fails is the bearing. If you know a good 4x4 shop, they can press a new one for $150.
So, you see paying a dealer is a joke.

Typical wheel/rim issues occur during a certain speed range. Mine is usually 50 - 80. Must be some harmonic thingy ??? Its possible a rim got bent too ~ winter is hell on roads. I've bent a few (different cars) and have a GREAT guy in N.C. that corrects and tests upto 200mph; if you need that. Oh, he's about 1/2 the cost too.

Currently, I've got a noise, but its not thumpy. I'm thinking wheel bearing, but its not a known issue.

Of course, I'll try to DIY whatever it is. If not, off to my Indy here in Central VA.

 

Great feedback! I wasn't aware that this is a prone defective part. Do you know of any other defects that are typical to occure that I might want to watch out for?

Also, should I be worried to damage anything while driving the car to have it fixed or is this something that is better to just have towed?

IF its not 'thumping' loudly, it can be driven for repair. The bearing's race will keep it together until that time. You just don't want it to come about and toss ball-bearings everywhere (ever see the movie Swordfish - ).

2 other main issues:

Plastic Cooling Tubes: A LOT of issues; even a class-action suit can be found here and RennList. Again, cheaper parts available on-line and its a DIY if you're at all handy.

CoilPacks: Once you get a CEL, the Stealer will actually take care of this for you. They're about $290 retail + easy labor...but its a freebie !

Otherwise, these are a wonder to drive !!!

 

Good call on the class action suit, I'll do a little research into that, do you know if any of it has gone through for a silent recall?

Coilpacks: a CEL? I'll be bringing this up to them as well.

Totally an amazing automobile. Anything that big, with so many features and so little limits is just awesome. I love it.

Coil packs and plastic coolant hoses under the intake are a big problem too.

 

When 1 of my coils gave up, I had massive vibration to, you still have power?
