Hi All,
I just started the car this morning, the head unit turned on, Radio tunes, Nav works etc, but no sound. I tried to go thru the menu make sure the mute is not turned on, and reset the unit to factory reset but no go.
amp is located in the front trunk under the spare or in the side panel by the fuel tank pass side
Thanks man, I do know where the amp is located, I should have been more clear, is there on board fuse in the amp? or should I check the kick panel set of fuses?
Yes, there is no separate entry for the amp on the fuse panel - the amp must be included in the "radio" stuff. You will see E1 also mentions the radio. E6 is the Nav system. If the amp had its own fuse, it would be listed there.
Edit: You may want to check with a voltmeter to see if power is getting to the amp...
I had this happen occasionally on another 996 and all I had to do was unplug the amp for a few min and plug it back in and all came back on. Hope that helps.

Occasionally the radio in my 2003 Turbo while it turns on and all the controls appear to work doesn't make sound. Turning the radio off then back on doesn't help. Even turning the engine off then back on again doesn't help.
What it takes -- I'm told I've never tried this -- is to remove the fuse for the radio which effects a power reset of the radio or because this is too much work to turn the engine off and the the key off and remove the key and wait.
However, while I've done this it is only after I have reached my destination.
Because the car's electrical system can remain powered for some minutes even after the car had been shut down and locked I just don't have the time to wait for the radio to power down and recover upon a restart.
Might add that the radio seems more inclined to behave this way when the battery is getting close to the end of its life.
