GPS Lap Timers (redux)
GPS Lap Timers (redux)
I’m in need of a basic GPS lap timer to help me assess my driving at DEs. I’m looking at a Gtechpro (http://www.gtechpro.com/rr_fanatic.html) which looks entirely reasonable. Does anyone have experience with this, or anything comparable?
I’ve seen this question asked before but never with helpful replies. What do others use for this purpose? I can’t deal with transponders as many DEs won’t permit any type of data acquisition, so must be somewhat stealthy. Any help or advice is appreciated.

Just to look at all your options, you might want to check into the smartphone apps if you already have a smartphone with GPS (e.g. Harry's Lap Timer, Trackpro, etc.). With a good holder, such as the one by TomTom, this setup is pretty cool and certainly adequate for any DE events.
QStarz.
It's cheap, it's VERY accurate, it's small, simple, the list goes on. I can't believe they haven't taken over big time in the US, everyone I know that has bought one has been happy with it. You can also now overlay video with the telemetry which is cool.
Plus if you need to be stealthy it's very small and can be mounted just about anywhere.

Depending on your budget, I've been happy with Traqmate and many of the guys I coach and race with use it as well. They have good product support and easy to use hardware and software. If you think you'll ever go beyond DE, it will be a great tool no matter what level or car you end up driving.

Check out the new AIM Solo. It has the quality of AIM in depth data review and is only $399. I have traqmaster for Android, and it's a cool toy, but does not compare to a real data system. I cannot speak on the other phone apps. But AIM speaks for itself.

Android users can pick from either trackmaster or aLap Recorder HD. Can pair either one up with a qstarz external gps for more accurate tracking. Either apps offer trials and full version is between 10 to 20bux. aLap includes selection of track maps and can also tether to a BT ODB2 reader and collect and over lay rpm, maf reading, etc.
Here is one video on YouTube :

AIM Solo GPS
AIM just came out with an awesome product that lowers the cost barrier for a true data acqusition unit for the track day junkie. The Aim Solo GPS is a compact, self containted, battery powered (or hardwired), GPS based lap timer and data unit. It can be set to display a number of different data points: current lap time, last lap time, predictive timer (a great tool to get instant feedback, see if your current lap is shaping up to be faster or slower than your last lap, or your best lap), speed, and elapsed time.
The Solo DL is the big brother to the Solo and takes readings from the ECU to record engine data through the OBD2 port. The DL can also be paired up with AIMs Smartycam system to overlay video and data to show speed, lap time, gear selection, brake pressure, throttle position, etc.
Titan Motorsports, has the AIM Solo available now ($399) and Solo DL ($699) available for pre-order. Suction cup window mount is also available ($44.99). Give us a call or email to order yours.
