Best all around trackable Porsche?

Looking for options and opinions on what you guys consider the best Porsche to take to track events at Road America, Laguna Seca, Road Atlanta, barber, etc.

The caveat being that it must be a street car, and must be newer than 2005.

Louis

Its not even a choice. GT3 is really only trackable street car worth buying from Porsche anymore.

There are plenty of good choices including the PDK S.. I watched a PDK run side by side with the 997.1 Gt3 with very equal drivers.. I find PDK S to be much more street friendly and for 99% of drivers is even a faster track track IMO.. The GT3 is better in the right hands of course but what may be BEST for you may not be a GT3..

How is the reliability of said platforms? Any issue tracking a PDK? How maintenance intensive are GT3s? Im a Pcar noob, not a track junkie noob, however.

Im researching the nuances of GT3s currently. Thank you for the suggestions, as they are priced similarly (used) to ZR1s, which is on the top of my "trackable" pile.

Ive got lots of seat time in all sorts of cars, karts and bikes, learning to drive it will be a new challenge.

How do the twin turbo cars do on track? Any issues with heat/turbo related failures/ complexity problems? I like to tinker, and I like turbos

Where is Steve Theodore? He is my great internet track friend whom Ive yet to meet in person

Thanks again

Louis

I have a 997.1 TT that I track quite a bit. It's also a "daily driver" that I drive to the track; typically 200+ miles each way. With a few suspension mods, a set of good tires and a competent driver, the turbo can hold its own and then some against most P-cars especially on the big tracks such as Road America where power is at a premium on the long straights. Last May I drove mine from Colorado to Road America, spent 3 days on the track and then back home with no issues.

Unfortunately, in the blistering heat of July while at the track, one of the turbos blew and took out the motor, intercoolers, exhaust and everything else that costs a lot of money. We literally are going to start the rebuild this weekend, which is another story all by itself, and as you can see from my signiture, I'll end up with a ride capable of producing some 775 hp that's as at home on the street as it is on the track. Aside from the unanticipated expense and various delays in getting the car back, I'm kind of excited about what I'm going to end up with. Anyway, here's a link to the thread describing my misadventure which you may find helpful as you evaluate your options. Good luck in your decision making!

Steamboat, thank you. Lots to consider with a TT car.

I am very mechanically inclined, so maintenance and upgrades wont be an issue.

A few more questions, prior to a search, so forgive me-

Are there any oil starvation issues with either 997 GT3 or TT?
What would you track junkies do as a first round of updrages such as Steel brakes if the car is equipped with ceramics, stainless lines, ?

Thanks

Louis

Ummmm, if this is Lou G. from LG motorsports I think we are all getting punked. He is a champion Corvette driver and team owner. He probably knows more about Porsche race cars than Patrick Long or Wolf Henzler.

Trader!

Hi Lou:

Bought a few items from you (or your father)for my Z06. I would go with a GT3, GT3RS or a GT2. Either car is track ready with a change of tires but many upgrades can be applied to increase it's prowess. Suspension, Guard LSD, and coilovers along with additional safety equipment would tame the "widow maker" GT2 while the GT3/GT3RS is ready to go. I am in the market myself and looking for a GT3 or GT3RS or maybe even a C5 Z06 (already have a GT2 but use it for DD, 1/4 mile, and 1 mile runs as it will soon be 1200 WHP+ - currently 900 WHP).

I think you would really enjoy either one and given you can do all the work yourself you would save a bit of $$$.

Either way - Good Luck and Happy Holidays.

SLOW
