My cheap, fast, and fairly accurate data setup
My cheap, fast, and fairly accurate data setup
I figured I would just post this here since I keep getting asked about it in my youtube videos.
The first video below is actually shot with my iphone and I can upload it to youtube from the track! This requires no PC and the whole process can be managed from your iphone and the editing is done on youtube. If I had a better phone mount and an iPhone 4s the quality would be better but it still is lacking a bit for me as it can't look at the data over multiple laps. It will soon though so it will probably be the easiest way to get the data I want by next year with an iphone 5 doing the video recording.
The other videos are taken on a gopro HD Hero and would look much much better if I stopped being cheap and bought a GoPro Hero 2! I take that video and import it into Dashware. Dashware is very difficult to use until you figure it out. I am only now starting to really get it. The documentation is diabolical and the support has been lackluster at best. There is another program called Trackvision which apparently is better but it costs 3x what Dashware costs and so it went with Dashware.
All of the data you see in my video is captured by my iphone using Harry's laptimer. Here is a video (you need to skip in because the data starts when I cross start finish) that shows what it will look like with Throttle and RPM data:
I didn't add the map or g forces to this one but I could have. Just forgot:
More data displayed here:
In order to do this you need the following.
Harry's Laptimer for the iPhone (if you don't use an iPhone an iPod touch or iPad can be substituted) - http://www.gps-laptimer.de
Emprum UltiMate GPS - http://amzn.com/B005I0JYUY
Satechi CR-3600 Universal Car Holder & Mount for iPhone4S, 4, 3GS, 3G - http://amzn.com/B002K9IPOC
Kiwi PLX OBDII WiFi - http://amzn.com/B002ICSOTC
If you don't plan to record using the iPhone you can buy a GoPro HD Hero II Motorsport edition and Dashware
Two things:
I bought the mount before video was available through the app so I would check Harry's site here (http://www.gps-laptimer.de/Compatibility.html) for better alternatives if you plan to do video that way but the mount I bought seems to be ok.
There is a new option for OBDII data, the GoPoint BT1 (and GL1) which works over Bluetooth which is supposedly better. It doesn't work with Harry's laptimer yet but will soon so it might be worth holding out for.
Let me know if this helps or if you have any questions.

Yes. I detail how I do it in the second paragraph and the 2nd and 3rd video are go pro videos.
HLT works awesome, especially with the GoPoint BT1 Bluetooth dongle. I used this set-up this weekend at Roebling Road. Amazing video and telemetry data for around $100 all in. Hard to beat.
So, you can use Harry's LT with a GoPro camera? You just need to use the Dashware to overlay the data onto the GoPro recording? Will it work with the Bluetooth, or do you need wifi?
Thanks.
Thanks.
Sorry for the redundant questions, its just that this is the first time I've seen information about the ability to use GoPro camera with Harry's LT.

Yes, you can use GoPro and Harry's with Dashware. Not sure what you mean by Bluetooth or WiFi however.
I use dropbox which you can export directly to from HLT. Once the files are there you can import them into Dashware and insert the graphical representations of them. Really the only tricky part is synching them. I have two tricks for this. Usually I set the go pro up where it can see the iphone so I see the time and can synch it that way. If it is too bright out I will look for the first shift point and match it to the data.
Ok, please excuse my ignorance, but…
1--Have GoPro3 camera
2-- Need external GPS (to provide data on where car is), correct? (I have an ITouch, not an IPhone)
3--Need OBD II sensor to provide car data (RPM's, etc.), correct?
What else…?
Harry's Lap Timer OR Dashware OR Trackvision ??? (to sync and overlay video and data) ??
OR, HLT AND Dashware, or Trackvision?
Do I still need to incorporate an ITouch with this if I use Dashware or Trackvision ?
Do I need to incorporate an ITouch if I use HLT ?
Thanks greatly

You will need the GPS and Harry's laptimer.
You can overlay the videos in HLT if you want to but it is painful to get the gopro videos onto your IPod touch to do it so I would recommend trackvision OR dashware (I chose dashware due to cost).
Hope this clears it up.
For those just getting started, all you need is an iPhone, HLT ($20 in iTunes) and the GoPoint BT1 for the throttle, rpm and gear info ($99). dave
