2009 GTi Oil Change: Drain Tube Necessary?

I bought a 2009 VW GTi. I'm getting ready for my first oil change.

Do I need to buy the $35 drain tube thing on this page?

Thanks!

Smile Oil change

No you dont have too! But I will recoment you take your car to the dealer that has the right tools for the job and are very fast and guarranty nothing will go wrong. My dealer charges me only $55.00+tax for oil change for full synthetic and oil filter (that you should always do). Yes you may go to wallmart and they will do it for 40 or 45, but I wouldn trust just anyone touching my GTI!

BTW, when you take to the dealer the always check for other things too. They fix mine (like the recall for the fuel regulator) when I was there for oil change and they told me after words. Dealer usealy will take care off you.

Now that said, that does mean I like dealers to do anything else unless is cover by the warranty! The rest I do my self.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't trust dealers to do anything they say. I don't trust them to rotate tires, change oil, nothing.

I have seen first hand a dealer that said they rotated my tires and i know for a fact it wasn't done. (Volvo dealer in NC).

Nobody cares for my car as much as me.

I just got the filters, wrench and the drain tube (whether I needed it or not) in the mail today. I'll be changing my oil Saturday despite the "free oil changes" from the dealer.

Let us know if you ended up using the drain tube... it never hurts to be prepared for my first oil change.

I got the wrong filters; the 2009 has a different engine with the oil filter on top. So, no tube drainage etc....

the 2009 has a metal filter, not a paper cartridge.

I'm surprised you are doing it yourself, not only do you have free maintenance for 3 years, if something goes wrong its covered under warranty, but if you do it yourself and something goes wrong, they can say well we don't have any records showing you got your oil changed and anything else that needed to be done and can void your warranty.

On a side note, did you get an 09 GTI or Jetta? DSG or Manual? I just got my wife an 09 Jetta DSG about 6 weeks ago. Which dealer did you buy from? I work for GMP in Charlotte but I live up in Huntersville and went through Keffer VW. They have a great Service and Sales Department. Where in South Carolina are you from?

I'm in Spartanburg. bought in Greenville SC.

It is a 2009 DSG GTi. I thought I'd try paddles since it seems to be all the rage; I will not do it again, wish i had the manual.

I keep records of the oil purchase and the filter purchase.

Have you gotten it chipped yet? I have GTI myself with Manual, but I opted to get my wife a dsg because her previous car was a manual. I like driving it on the weekends, its like taking a day of from work lol, nice little break away from having to shift all the time during the week.

Since I work for GMP, I got it chipped with APR Software the day after we took it home. It makes the DSG a lot more fun. Feel free to come on up for a free 6 hour trial or I can let you test drive our Jetta while your up here. Let me know.

I just changed the oil in the 09 GTi. Not even worth taking pics; too easy.

The drain is 18mm, there is no need to remove the undertray.

The metal filter on top is easy to remove, not a drop of oil escaped.

Easiest oil change EVER.

Its not needed. The important part of owning a VW is being good with your service department, and visa versa. One dealerships experiences (bad or good), goes a long way.

I have the 2009 GTI w/ DSG and love it but after having changed the oil in all of my previous cars at around every 3k I was surprised that I didn't have to get the oil changed in an engine with a turbo until 10k. I bought a filter and synthetic oil to keep on hand after I bought this car but waited until the 10k check up to have the oil changed by the dealer.
I'm like others and can't trust them for some reason. So I'm going to do the oil and filter myself very soon.
I'm glad to read that post that the change was easy.

I had a MK5 and took it to the dealer as long as ti was under warranty. On my MK3 I did all my own work. It sucks paying more to have the dealer do simple maintenance, but they fix other things while its there... I always had something to complain about.
