Transmission grinds when downshifting into 2nd gear

Every other gear on the car works fine, but when I try downshifting into second, the transmission makes a grinding sound. It doesnt happen on the 1-2 shift, only when I downshift. It feels as if it doesn't want to go into 2nd gear. If i try to shift it in, it feels as if there is some resistance. If I move it extrememly slowly and wait 2-4 seconds, there is no grinding.

Is there a problem with my transmission, or is it somehting else? This started happening recently (after I had a new clutch and flywheel installed). Could it have something to do with a faulty install? or is it most likely a tranny problem?

And if it is a problem with the transmission, will the whole thing need to be replaced?

if you installed a lightweight flywheel it could be that your rev matching is off and your 2nd gear synchro was weak before but your rev matching was better and it didn't show...most likely 2nd gear synchro...you can try double clutching and see if it doesn't grind...that would likely point to the synchro

no LWFW. I put in the OEM clutch/flywheel.

I don't know much about trannys, but could a synchro alone be replaced? or does the entire tranny need to be changed?

they can replace just the synchro but while they are in there you might want them to take a good look around for other potential problems and replace some wear items...the labor charge will hurt either way so you might as well end up with a reliable tranny

Did you ever "miss" a shift going down into second? I had a similar problem on my 996 after missing a downshift into 3rd on the track. To make a long story short I ended up having to get the whole transmission replaced... a little under $5,000 and my local P-car dealer. As for the every other gear thing, it was explained to me that R-1-3-5 are all somehow connected as are 2-4-6.

I had a similar issue about 2 months ago plus when my car was cold when I placed it in 2nd it would pop back out on its own. I took it to my Indy and they replaced 2nd gear, the syncro and some other odds and ins inside the tranny. The total was almost $4000 but I have an extended warranty which covered a lot of it. Also, they replaced my 2nd gear with one that was modified to correct this issue. This was something reported by Porsche as a part to be modified.
I also am having the clutch replaced with a Spec Stage II, a Spec LWFW, the RMS replaced and my coolant expansion tank replaced.
I should get the car back late this week and can't wait after 8-9 weeks!!

Good luck with your car.

I had the same problem, I had the 2nd gear synchro replaced along with a few other things for $4k. Check on Pelican parts to research the part prices.

Could it have anything to do with the fact that my clutch was just replaced? It didnt used to grind before the clutch/flywheel was replaced.
But I am a bit confused because it is only with 2nd gear...

i have the same problem too while downshifting when 1) the engine is cold, or 2) when rev is high at a slow speed. ie ~4k rpm at ~20-30mph. I've always thought it's normal?!

I thought it was normal too. Maybe you just need a gear oil change or a linkage is a bit off.
