964RS FW/GT3 4.0 Disc/764 PP drivetrain noise
#17
I think a lot of people here may be confusing the issue and may actually have the older RS disc instead of the 4.0. The older RS (with blue springs) was noticeably louder. The 4.0 has the marking "gertiebeseite" (gearbox side) clearly marked on it and has a pronounced neck on it which fits into the flywheel. I would not think it could be installed backwards. The older disc did not have this neck and could likely be flipped. I'm thinking that's what LOOK has.

OK, after reading the responses it seems this setup is a bit noisy in neutral with the clutch released. It feels great and makes me wish I never got that ClutchMasters FX350 which was awful. Everyone who drove the car told me it was the worst feeling clutch they had ever driven.
It was nearly impossible to launch the car.
I made the post after listening to it in my garage for the first time which really amplifies the level of sound compared to outside. This probably colored my impression considerably.
If you're going with this setup, expect a little chatter, but also expect to be impressed with the near perfect clutch feel.

The transmission mount inserts make the gearbox noise very loud. No way around it. Stick with a 997 mount..
I run this combo with a 997 trans mount, 964RS engine mounts, Cup shifter/cables, and a lwfw flash that raises idle from 740 to 860. There is virtually no extra audible noise...

Any merit to this "window welding" on the 997 mount? From what I can tell, the 997 is far superior than the 996 so why mess with it if it work is my thinking.

On another note, I window welded my factory 996 mount before it failed. I scuffed and cleaned the existing rubber and added window weld over the existing rubber. Fast forward to engine removal for a clutch jib and coolant pinning and as soon as the belly pans were removed two transmission sized chunks of window weld fall to the shop floor. The window weld did not adhere well enough to stay. The other sides came off as well when the mount was removed off the transmission.

I would not window weld your mount.

after 3 yrs its more than paid for itself at 20$. if it lasts another 2-3 yrs its just a bonus as it would be considered a wear item and not expected to last forever
