new stereo in the 996

well after much hard work i think i have finally gotten the stereo upgraded in the 996. after trying some mb quartz and bowing them i went to diamond audio and got a 3 way setup from ebay.....

they had a "true" 4.5" speaker, rather than a 4" speaker like everyone else sells. The mounting ring was slightly larger than the previous 4.5" so i had to trim it off slightly in order to make it fit.

the tweeter was also larger than the 1" pre-existing tweeter, (more like 1.75") so after some trimming, i have gotten that to fit....

and of course the mid base speakers were 6.5" not 5.25 like the stock ones (actually measured out to 6.8") so a LOT of trimming on the stock box i got that to fit....

i also have made 2 fiberglass enclosures for 2 10" sub woofers and it is all being powered by a 450/4 jl audio sub and a 500/1 jl audio sub....

after all this work i would defiantly say there is a HUGE improvement in sound, probably the best stereo in a car i have ever owned......

wouldn't recommend this setup to anyone who is scared of modifying the speaker baffles or stock woofer boxes but if you are a better stereo is very obtainable

will follow up with pictures tomorrow.....

here are some pics, if you are wondering where the amps are they are behind the spare tire! as you can see the diamond audio is the same size as the stock one, just had to trim the mounting rin to get it to properly fit

Do you have the stock head unit...i was thinking of amping my stock system...they are decient speakers i think some more power will bringthem to life...

Was the amp install as simple as splicing wires and reading the wiring diagram??

I have an MTX 7500 10" in one of my other cars...with 3 amps...im thinking of taking that system apart...and puting parts of it in the P-Car

i replaced the head and ran all new wires to all the speakers, i didnt want to cut any of the stock wire harness.

the mtx is probably too deep for where i placed them unless you want to replace the back seat.

i used a 10" pioneer speaker that was only 4" deep.

the stock speakers cant handle very much power unless you cut the frequency off fairly high...then you HAVE to have the sub...

Do you have any pictures of mounting the 6.5" speakers on the factory door enclosure that you trimmed?

Very nicely done- Bet that was a lot of work.
Are you going to cover up the wires and xovers in the trunk area?
