Charger Hellcat Takes on Nissan GT-R in Epic Race

Driver mod and lots of traction help this heavy Hellcat take down a GT-R despite its many obvious disadvantages.

Most people have mixed feelings when it comes to street racing. And we get it. It can be highly dangerous, irresponsible, and downright stupid. So, personally, we’re more apt to take our speed demon desires down to a controlled environment, not a busy road, and it can also be pretty darn awesome once you switch the scene to a safer, more suitable location, like a local closed track. Thankfully though, this recent street race showdown between a Dodge Charger Hellcat and Nissan GT-R, as captured in this popular Valley Racing clip, goes off without a hitch. Somewhat.

This is an interesting race even before it begins, too. On one side, you’ve got an old-school, big-horsepower, heavyweight, rear-wheel-drive machine. On the other side, an all-wheel drive, turbo six-cylinder machine known for its ability to launch cleanly off the line. Pulling that off in a Hellcat Charger is, well, a little more difficult. This match-up is akin to pitting a big hammer against a precisely calibrated digital torque wrench.

Charger Hellcat vs Nissan GTR

The Charger’s case is greatly aided by the fact that it’s wearing drag radials and the surface is prepped beforehand. The Nissan, on the other hand, looks to be wearing stock wheels and tires. Ultimately, that isn’t what does our GT-R driver in, however. He kicks off the race by sleeping at the tree while the Hellcat cuts a perfect light. He makes up some ground once he gets going, but not enough.

In all fairness, it does look like the Hellcat crosses the line at one point. But the rules of street racing vary depending on where you are, so we’re guessing that doesn’t matter in Compton. Otherwise, this looked like a pretty clean, pretty even race that could have gone either way. So, maybe, just maybe, a big old heavy hammer can compete with the precision tool after all. If you have a driver mod, that is.
