Zero to 60 times, top speed figures, none of these matter in the 911 R, as the sports car provides an unparalleled experience.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock…Actually, never mind,  even the creepy crawleys that live deep in the soil know about the Porsche 911 R. On paper, the 911 R isn’t as good as the hardcore 911 GT3 RS, or even the track-focused 911 GT3. But once you get behind the wheel of the sports car, it’s easy to see how the 911 R is easily one of the most engaging vehicles on the road today and an experience to behold.

Carfection got behind the wheel of a 911 R to see if Porsche, in the midst of fitting turbochargers and automatic transmissions to its cars, could make something that’s engaging and fun to drive on the road. Unsurprisingly, it turns out they can.

The GT3 RS is a machine that’s built for lap times and going fast on the track. Its aggressive body kit, PDK transmission, and fat tires make it dominate on any track day. On the road, all of this translates to something that’s incredibly quick, but not as enjoyable. The 911 R on the other hand, which boasts a lot of the same mechanicals as the GT3 RS, is nearly as quick, while having some touches that provide for an engaging ride.

The 4.0-liter flat-six engine howls throughout the entire car thanks to barely any sound deadening, the six-speed manual transmission is a joy to use, and there are minimal gadgets to take away from the act of driving. As Carfection puts it, the 911 R is the perfect 911 and all others should be modeled after it.

There is one problem, though, that Carfection points out. It’s that there aren’t a lot of 911 Rs on the road and enthusiasts that want one will have to be millionaires to afford one.
