Can You Live With A Wild Trackday Special As A Daily Driver?

By -

This open-top car doesn’t have a windshield, or creature comforts of any kind, but it might be the greatest daily driver ever.

As I write this, it is currently showering buckets of water down outside, littered with little pieces of hail. The weather, in fact, looks much like it does in a section of the video featured above. Would I take a carbon fiber clad, 310 horsepower Caterham 620R with semi-slick tires out for a jaunt down to the grocers and back in this weather? You can bet your bollocks I don’t want to. But, I could.

There isn’t much worse than sprinting from the dry comfort of a building through the pouring wet to get to the dry comfort of a car. The only thing worse that I can imagine would be sprinting from the dry comfort of a building through the pouring wet to get to a wet car with no roof, then driving that roofless car back home with the rain still coming down. You’d be soaked to the bone in seconds, and even a summer rain is cold and stings your face at crawling speeds. Need to take the interstate home? Forget about it.

Okay, so on poor weather days, this Caterham might not be the best of daily drivers, but imagine what it’s like when the weather is good. Oh boy, let me loose in this wild machine on a dry day, and even the most boring of commutes becomes a lively thrust-and-parry. I would welcome traffic, potholes, and the always glorious highway on-ramp. Light the fuse and hammer down, we’re heading to the office! Oh yes, dry and cool summer evenings are what this car is made for. It’s a hairy experience to say the least, but one that will remind you that you are alive, that you have a pulse. These glorious drives outweigh the horrendous ones tenfold. Why commute in something plush and comfortable – like a Mazda MX-5 – when you could have something pure and raw like this?
