Replica Question?
Replica Question?
i know there are a lot of 356 cpe and cabriolet replicas and i am wondering if any of the replica/kit makers were eligible for registry from porsche
i know that the superformance shelby cobra and gt40 are considered continuation cars and are registry eligible
was wondering if anything was available like that when it comes to old school porsche replica cars
reason im asking is because the GF and i saw a few and she digs it and we are thinking about pickin one up any info you guys can give would be greatly appreciated
sorry if this has been asked before i tried a search and that came up was a replicar for sale
thanx in advanced

Greetings,
If you are talking about being able to join the 356 Registry with a kit-car, well, yes and no. You can join the Registry without owning any car. But if you join the 356 Registry you would not be able to enter the car in a Registry event. The Registry is for 356s that came off the factory assembly line in Germany.
The whole kit-car replica thing is pretty sensitive to alot of Porsche owners. There are as many opinions as there are people! And not just 356ers. Take a look at a thread on the 997 board about a guy that tricked his 997 out to look just like a GT3 RS. He got ripped for being a "poser".
I had a 55 356 Speedster (a real one) and everytime I got gas or parked it somewhere I was asked if it was a kit. Got a little irritating after awhile!
I don't really care either way, as long as the owner of a kit-car isn't representing it as a real Porsche.
There are kit-car clubs that don't look down there snooty noses like some of the other clubs do. It really should just be about fun, but there are people that think fun requires a full price of admission!

sweet that sounds good, i guess reason im asking is i am pretty interested in the JPS kit/replica speedster (not the flared) and i like to do a lot meets gatherings and rallys etc.
hard to explain since everytime i go to a specific car event i am not rolling a kit/replica
just want to know how the 6ers would see it at?
but after all it is about the fun...and the less you have to pay the better of you are "more bang for the buck"
another question of course is performance how would a replica/kit stack up against a "true" 356?
TIA again

Well - by now you may already own one of these replica 356's - whether or not - check out www.speedsterowners.com - it's a site and forum for replica owners - lots of good discussion on tech and non-tech topics - West Coast Group affiliated with this forum gets together yearly - this year in Morro Bay 4/24-26 - with about 40 cars including all types of speedster replicas and a few spyder replicas too...550Rick

Agree 100 percent - buy a replica if you love the styling and enjoy it. We Speedster owners are cool with that - just please don't try too hard to rationalize it as a real Porsche.

What I love about buying a good replica is that I wouldn't afraid of using it daily and driving the snot out of it.
With a real one, I'd be nervous just pulling it out of my garage.
generally unlike cobra reps p-car reps receive little respect - too bad as some like intermeccanica & beck built out on tube frames are superbly finished-true drivers, better looking than original 356's

Anyone who pretends their replica is real is doing a disservice to those who spend a fortune on buying and restoring a real 356 as it costs me alot every year, and I would be a little ticked to see a guy showing off his 15k vw panned version as mine is still in the "shop"!! I'm not hating...I just wish everyone could just be happy within their own skin. The replicas are cool fun cars and some, ie beck actually perform much better and are safer than the original that theirs is based on. So why not just be proud of that as you fly past me on the freeway and leave me with my war stories of paying a mortgage payment for a replacement steering wheel, when it got stolen outside of a night club, no doubtly put on Ebay where I had to look for another. Anyhow, there is unique characteristics unique to both and should be celebrated for that. Buy whatever your wallet allows and just be proud of it, regardless if it came from germany or idianana.
