'71 914-6 Completed Restoration

Hi All,
My '71 914-6 (original 6) just completed a full rotisserie restoration. It took quite a while, over 8 years from beginning to end, but 5 years of that was a bad decision I made regarding a shop in VA. Once I got my car where it should have been from the beginning, it took about 2 years. Here are some pictures of it completed. The complete build thread is here from the point it went to Los Angeles and in the talented hands of some great guys whom I am proud to call my friends. http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=313869 And if you really want to kill some time, grab a cup of coffee and get comfortable because here is the first part of the build where it all went wrong. http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=188776 Sometimes stuff just happens. Fortunately I caught it before it went off the cliff and was unsalvageable. Enjoy.

So Have about 2,600 miles on the car this far. It has been on two great drives- one local with about 25 Porsches on a road designed for our cars. Mines Road to Mt. Hamilton and back. Then the first weekend of November the West Coast Ramble in Petaluma which was a 2-day rally/show that featured about 40 914's. The first day was nice tight roads perfect for our cars and the second day was coastal driving and higher speeds. The car is running great and I got lucky and got the top award of the 2-day rally. "Best of Rally" I was humbled as there were some really nice 914s present.

I added a set of Hella Euro rear lenses. I think they look great.

Just had my custom Steve Wong chip re-programmed ('87 3.2 with 964 cams and stock Motronic injection) to adjust for the large-tube SS heat exchangers and free-flow 2 in 1 out muffler. I also had him lower the idle to 800-825. It was idling at about 875-900. Runs and idles great. BTW total turn-around time was 9 days from removal to reinstall and running. I thought that was very good.

I have about 3,400 miles on my car now and just swapped out the K&N air filter and pipe for a stock 3.2 airbox and I love the look and it seems to actually run better. The K&N always looked out of place to me.

I like these plates better than the blue/yellow even though the blue/yellow are period correct.

Had a coil failure the other day. Turns out I had the wrong coil for the '87 3.2. But, I ended up needing a flatbed. Fortunately I was at my brother's so no big deal. Oh well, the car rode nicely and the tow operator loved the car. New coil (correct one) in and the car runs perfect.

Hi guys- Entered my car in the PCA Werks Reunion at Bayonet Golf Club in Seaside, CA and was fortunate. It was well received and earned the 1st place award for 914/914-6 cars. Tons of people all very respectful and no crowding. Cars were all spaced well apart. 700 Porsches and 200 were entered for judging. Great live music and since the 914 was the featured car of the event, we were right up front. Here are a couple of pictures:

First thing in the morning, about 0700 - still misty and overcast out.

My twin brother and best friend, Bob and I standing in front of my car. I am in the blue.

Cars have started to arrive. We were fortunate to arrive at about 0630 and were able to drive right in and were directed where to park by a volunteer worker.

Cars are starting arrive.

A few 914's on the hill.

A really nice clean 914-6 GT clone.

As soon as the sun came out so did this bumble bee.

A Patrick Motorsports freshly built 914-6 GT clone. Extremely nice car and James Patrick and a couple of his employees were present for the show. He brought 2 911's and this 914.

Judges taking their first look at my car.

James Patrick builds some of the best 914s on the planet- IMHO.

I was walking around checking out some of the cars and came back just as a judge placed this on my windshield- Yay!

Here I am waiting to drive up onto the stage to accept the award.

Took her to a little local car show - 2 miles from my home - we had about 125 cars and I was amazed at how many people just loved the little 914. Probably several thousand people showed up to look at our cars. Live music, food, etc. We were well protected by 4 deputies for the whole show.

Decided to replace my RennShifter with the stock 914 shifter (restored) and the factory hand throttle that belonged in the car. Looks much better. I am still waiting for the shifter boot to cover the floor area.

I discovered that my heater lever (red ****) is actually a hand throttle lever. I have sourced the correct heater lever to replace it so it looks and functions correctly.

I took my car for a nice drive on Monday with the top off and the seat heaters on. It was beautiful and she drove perfectly and shifted so nicely. I just received the newly released 370mm Momo Prototipo steering wheel (Yay) and will be sending it off to Dallas Customs to have the rim padded and wrapped in their high-quality black leather. The rim just felt a bit thin to me; my original wheel is also padded and wrapped by Dallas Customs and it feels so good in your hands. The cost to pad/wrap the Prototipo is $500 including shipping.

Been a bit busy with a couple projects. Installed the Weltmeister short-shift kit and it really made a nice difference. I don't feel like I am paddling a canoe when shifting now. Also completed the pedal cluster clutch pivot shaft replacement with the correct clutch pivot shaft. That allowed us to get the hand throttle working like new. It also reduced the clutch pedal pressure by about 50%- huge difference now and so welcome. Replaced the floor heater lever with the correct one. Also swapped out the front calipers/rotors with '88 Carrera calipers rebuilt and coated by PMB (Thanks Eric and crew) and the new Carrera drilled/coated rotors. Also found a slight kink in the right front hard brake line to the caliper which we replaced. Removed the brake proportioning valve since we have the larger front calipers/rotors and also installed a 23mm Master cylinder. Looking forward to driving her today hopefully to see the differences. Have a trip planned to Petaluma for an open house at the Red Barn (shop) to meet up with a bunch of 914 guys and cars. Should be a great drive to shake the car out again and wake her for the summer. Weather should be great- top off time.
