Is this the tranny

I was driving in my automatice 83 944 and heard a low sounding thud form the tranny area then the car would not go when I gave it gas, the car rolled to a stop, but nothing else, can put the car in any gear put does nothing, will stay cranked but does not engage in any gear, what might be the problem,

Does the shifter seem to feel the same? Maybe the linkage? Just going down the list.
