Congrats,

I'm looking at an 87 S4 with a bad motor...the rest is in C+, B- shape..

The voices in my head tell me to get it, the people in my life who love me tell me I'm nuts...

VTC--Good find!

There's a pretty active group of 928 owners a bit south of you. Larry (Feroz928) is a little closer than I am I think, but only by minutes. I'm just above (like 'on the hill' above) the junction of the 134 and the 2 in Glendale.

A few of us (and some others...) will be at the Village Coffee Roaster 'Euro Sunday' event tomorrow (3/25), 101 west/north to Mulholland, left off the freeway, a couple hundred feet on the left side starting at about 8am. Bring your car and find us there. I have a black S4, Larry has a red one, and there may be some others. We have a pretty good mutual-support network, and there are also some good mechanic references from Larry.

The SoCal928 owners group has a web presence on MSN groups, and there's a huge support network on the Rennlist 928 forum too. Lots of resources to keep you and the car happy.

Congrats on the buy, and welcome to the world of the 928!

I can't make it tomorrow. Probably next week. I need someone to show me the ropes on this car.

I work in Valencia, live about 17 min south east of Glendale (little Glendale ) Off the 60.

I would like to meet fellow owners. Let's keep in touch for the following week.
I remember always seeing a blk gts at the show, is he one of your guys?

See you soon,
Chris

Every time I see a 928, I think of that scene in Scarface

"Bulletproof this, and here, and the windows, and get me one of them phones, ya know with a... with a scrambler. And a radio with scanners, to pick up flying saucers, stuff like that"

Congrats on your new whip

Chris--

Pictures look great. Love to see it in person.

VCR-- I try to go the last weekend of the month for the 'Euro Sunday' event. Got there early (7:45) this morning and barely made it in to the middle area. OK show but not as good/big as the last one, by 2x. And I had the only 928 there. Maybe folks haven't reset their calendars to 'daylight spending', and think that next Sunday 4/1 is really The Day? I may go out just to see, but we need to get there early if we want to be in walking distance of the middle part.

The black GTS is not mine, and I haven't seen him since last fall latest. Trying to remember his name... It's Bud. Anyway, he was trying to sell the car at the time so he may be gone. He did a PCA concours event, and was marked down for repaint, and lost to a high-mile/non-original car owned by one of the judges... His is an original 17k mile car in perfect shape, so he was a bit put out. One of the folks in the clique there suggested that he spend some more time with the q-tips too. Gotta love that crowd.

My car is a not-quite-as-nice black S4.

----

Sounds like you drive right by the house here on your way to and from. OK, within a few miles anyway.

----

Do you have maintenence history on the car? There are a few time- and mileage-sensitive things like the timing belt service that need to be done without fail, 5 years/50k miles max. It's an interference motor and there are a lot of valves to bend if the belt fails. If you work on watch innards you'll be right at home with the front of the motor scattered all over your garage.

I have a stack of service history. To be quite honest, I haven't looked at most of it. It's quite a big stack. I plan on taking it in for a once over.
Do you have a recommeded mechanic?

Chris

Chris-

I do all the work on my car, so no 'recommended mechanic'. Larry (Feroz928) uses Jules Hauer in Van Nuys, and he likes him. You can also find references on the Socal928 MSN Group website under services. try http://groups.msn.com/socal928/928se...=15&sortstring=, and find

Hauer's German Car Service Jules 818-989-7068 7740 N. Sepulvedua Bl Van Nuys

among others. Look at the whole list and find somebody nearby. Several folks like Jules, and if you pass muster with him you're in good hands.

If you want to go through some familiarization on the car and a review of your service history, PM me and we can get together.

I can hook you up with a guy who has all the service manuals, tech bulletins and other literature all scanned and in a CD set. The paper factory workshop manuals are out of print, but show up once in a while on E-Bay. They last sold new in the $3-400/set range in paper, so the CD version is really a bargain. Print the pages you need, OK to color on them, print more when you need them.

I would like to get together.
I want to find a mechanic in the San Gabriel Valley, so I can drop it off quickly.
My car has some manuals, I don't know which ones to be exact.
But, this owner was so picky, he kept the original stereo after he pulled the tape deck out. The first aid is wrapped and unused!
The only cosmetic issue I see is the the edge near the rear windows..they have bowed a bit. Dash is perfect, everything is disturbingly mint.
I am picky as well, but this car is strangely mint
I am happy to have it.

This is its neighbor in my garage...

Hey Chris, nice neighborhood!

The rear quarter panels have a warpage history, especially cars that have been in the sun too often. Be aware that there is in fact an original slight 'bulge' on the edge of the rear quarter above the shock tower. The edge of that panel was never a perfect match with the window molding contour, for some reason.

On your mechanic needs, take a look at the link I sent you and see if there's someone closer. I hate referring shops since you are dealing with talent variable that move around with time of day and air temperature, your attitude, their attitude, etc. My wife thinks I should send the car to outside mechanics or sell it. Hasn't happened yet but no telling what will happen in the future.

Plan on a VCR vist on Sunday if you can, and we can meet/greet/share. There should be a few more 928's there too.

It will be around for a while. It was a pre-marriage asset and won't get dissolved in the murk of community property that easily.

I do the work on the car as a cruel form of self-inflicted 'therapy'. The costs of driving the car are way less than car payments on anything decent. TCOO is still less than driving a new Accord, and which would you rather arrive in?

The 928 is one of the better value secrets thes days if you find a great one. The flat depreciation curve more than offsets the tire costs, near as I can tell.
