Buying a 964
Buying a 964
Hey guys,
Right now I got a '84 930 turbo widebody, but im looking for something else for my boys to drive with me this summer. I am looking at an early '90's 964 but wanted to know if there was anything I should be looking for or be aware of before I buy the car. if anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

-early yrs of the series are generally reported as having oil leaks (no head seals), but most of those should have been remedied by now.
-92 and later 964's did have clutch upgrade
-whether coupe or cab they should be rattle free and feel solid/tight
-C2 is about 100km lighter than the C4 and is a tad faster. C4 is solid all weather car especially if you are considering winter motoring.
-until the last years of the series the 964 turbo models used the 3.3l engine. and therefore if most of the driving will be city/country road where you will not be engaging the turbocharger (ie fast/spirited driving but no WOT) you may find the C2/C4 to be quicker more nimble/more torque (their engine is larger at 3.6l and has higher compression)....best to test drive and form your own opinion
-manual trans tend to command a premium, good values are therefore often among the tips which generally are reported as solid
-the cab tops are not without their problems (but they are unbeatable in the summer. ck for top motor replacements/smooth operation of the power top. the tops themselves are not expensive, but the servo motors/cable replacements are.
-clutch should engage in the 1st 1/4 to 1/3 of travel smoothly
-there likely is a bunch of other stuff which you can also search out on the other technical porsche forums. but as always a p.p.i. by an independent pro shop, including leakdown test will be your best guide.
for leakdown 5% excellent, within 10% solid, 15%becoming borderline and approaching 20% might be wallet time.
Very nice car. I have seen it on ebay over the last month. The tan interior with all the extra tan leather options are not for me. But you have a very nice, extra clean car. What about the other 2 3.6 turbos you have?
Thank you
Thank you
