active rear-wheel steering

What it feels like to driving with the active rear-wheel steering?
Is it noticeably different?

It is very noticeably different particularly on the track. You will basically need to change how you drive the car and be very aware of the speeds through corners as the rear steering goes counter to the front in lower speeds and with the steering in the high speeds.

I did not particularly care for it as the car is not quite doing what you expect it to do, but to be honest most of the people who did not drive other cars or wanted to "feel" fast love them. There were a ton of 991 GT3 and Turbo, Turbo S cars at Paul Ricard this weekend.

I was amazed at how many GT3 RS4.0 cars showed up. About 6 of them and there was a GT2 RS also. Incredible watching them on the road. The GT3 RS4.0 seemed a bit fragile as a couple of them had broken transmissions and one had a seized engine! But I digress here.

BC991S is infamous around these parts
I ran my car for the first time last week at Willow Springs, and although very fast and stable around the track as a whole, I did not care for the 4 wheel steering on the low speed corners (particularly turn 4). At first I thought the rear tires were giving out and the rear of the car was sliding out. Then eventually I realized it was the rear being steered outward in what felt like a very awkward, non driver controlled manner. Never did get used to it throughout the day. High speed corners were no problem.

I've only done one track day in it and I was very impressed, granted my lowest speed was 45 or so in a corner. I can see how it would feel very strange if one were to hit a corner at less than 30 and the rears were steering opposite. Honestly the synchronous steering on corners over 50 is pretty amazing IMHO, the car feels a lot lighter than it should. There's a reason why the 991 GT3 has the RWS as well, though at a lower max angle.

I was pretty familiar w/ the track, it's a momentum track with a lot of turns and few straights, and I dropped 8 seconds from my best time last year w/ the 991S, and that's more from the RWS/PDCC/AWD than the power.

Are you sure there were a ton of 991 Gt3's? As far as I know, only a couple are back on the road, with most still waiting on motors.

Yes, I know, the sentence before that states "a ton of 991 GT3,...."

Maybe in France more have been released? Here in the states I think only a couple are back on the road.

My dealer emailed me about the 4WS update and some other things a couple of weeks ago. Is this the first time mentioned on 6spd in this thread? Maybe not all turbos are affected.

No worries. I do know the 991 GT3's are also getting a RWS software update along with the engine replacements.

They say it is for all. TT and TTS and it best be done as quickly as you can do it. He said the 4ws is now completely different program than before so it will work different, and better that how it was, but not so sure exactly where. Some of you guys might see if different on the track and let us hear about it ok!

Asked my dealer about this and other recalls. He says if you haven't been called then nothing to update on your car. He also says he hasn't heard about this campaign nor for anything else on the TTS.

Would be great if someone could shed more light on this recall and/or others that have been issued in respect of specific chassis numbers or more generally. If this affects my car then I want to go back to them and push them to look into this.

Thanks guys.

Here's my June email for my car delivered last year in December. Since it takes months for Porsche to act on a problem, this would probably only concern cars that were built before the second quarter.

Complimentary Technology Update
You and your 911 Turbo are invited, Mr. Xxxxx!

Dear Mr. Xxxxxx,

We hope the first few months with your new 911 Turbo have been enjoyable. Our goal is to ensure that every mile is as pleasant as your first, and that means bringing your vehicle up to the latest production specifications, similar to what you may have experienced with your smartphone's software updates. But unlike your phone, your 911 Turbo may need physical inspections and hardware upgrades as well.

Our records indicate that your vehicle has updates pending which can be easily handled by your authorized Porsche dealer. They have already been notified of these items, so preparations have been made to accommodate you as efficiently as possible. We would like to invite you to contact your Service Consultant at The Collection by calling (305) 444-5555 to schedule an appointment at your convenience. This would also be a great time to ask any questions you may have about the operation of your 911 Turbo since taking delivery.

Please know there is no charge for this service. And while none of these updates impact the safety of your vehicle, they will help to ensure your 911 Turbo is operating optimally, and will continue to provide a pleasurable driving experience. If you have already completed service in the last few days, there is no need for further action on your part at this time. If you have recently scheduled service, the updates should be made at your scheduled service visit.

Thank you for driving a Porsche.

Sincerely,
Tim Quinn
Vice President, Aftersales
