Today, Saturday, my dealer called early and said they just got their launch vehicles in and if I wanted to see them, to come in after lunch. My order, now on a boat, is expected in about two weeks, but he said I might want to see these in person. They got three, a black, a white, and a platinum silver. All were PDK Carrera S's.
When I got there, they were all out on test drives. I was interested in the black one since that's the color of the one I ordered. The white one showed back up first and the dealer said to take it out for a test. It was lightly optioned (leather seats only, no sport exhaust, no Sport Chrono, Bose instead of Burmester and no PDCC). It drove very tight, much more so than my Panamera Turbo and it cornered flatter than my PT (which has PDCC) and flatter than I remembered my 997.2 Carrera S. Even though it didn't have Sport Chrono I tried the same procedure for Launch Control and the acceleration was dramatic. The steering is better than I expected. In fact, I would go so far as to say it is superior to the old "jiggly" wheel—very stable and sure-footed. I didn't want to inconvenience other people that were waiting so I didn't keep it long. When I got back, the black one was back. It was similarly lightly optioned but it made the case for black versus white (to me) that has not been made by just looking at pictures.
In person, the car, sitting beside the 997's of all colors and models (from Speedster to GTS and Turbos) was not dramatically different. Being well versed in the models and having had many of them over the last decade or so, it is definitely a different car looks wise, but it is no prettier or uglier than the one it is replacing, just different. Inside, however, it is a step up and features wise, it is a giant step up.
The silver one was washed and waxed and moved on to the showroom floor. I watched them bring it in and tried to listen for a difference in the exhaust. It was the only one of the three that had sport exhaust. They weren't revving it, only driving it in reverse and I couldn't hear a difference. They all sound considerably better than any Porsche I've ever had. The silver one was the only one of the three with Sport Chrono, also. So it had several more buttons on the console and the display could show G-forces in cornering, though I didn't witness it. It had the Adaptive Sports Seats and a few more options and stickered at $123K. The other two were $112K. Believe me, the car is great at those prices and if you never heard of PDCC, you wouldn't miss it.
I didn't pay much attention to the Bose, but I did notice that with the only leather being the seats, the trim strip on the doors was not silver to match the silver on the dash, it was the same color vinyl as the rest of the door, though you could see where the decorative strip would be if there was one.
Another thing I was interested in checking out was the rear license plate indention. The pictures shown here and on other sites have shown both the wide cutout for the Euro version and the narrow cutout for the US market. I was worried the smaller cutout would make for a bulbous rear end after looking at some pictures. However, in person, at the standing height up close or even from a distance it looks "right."
All the cars had sunroofs, mine won't have it. It doesn't significantly increase the opening size like I thought it would and since I never used it in my other 911's and wouldn't in this one, I'm glad I saved the money and the line in the roof to watch out for when waxing. It wasn't as bad looking open as some on here have said, but it is there because, I'm sure, someone would have complained it it wasn't. I'll never miss it.
In summary, the features and the ride and handling are a reason to get it more so than the looks. Not that it looks worse, it doesn't, but it doesn't look all that much better, either. They still have, and can get, 997.2 Turbos and Turbo S's and "settling" for one of those, if they don't make a good deal on the 991, is in the back of my mind.

Thanks for the writeup - glad to hear your steering impressions. I heard the opposite on visuals. I heard a witness say "I thought the 997 was perfection and un-improveable until I saw the 991. Then I realized that you CAN improve aesthetic perfection. A dramatic improvement which makes the 997 instantly dated."

...and I certainly have no opinion as I haven't seen it in person. Just thoughts of another individual.
I like to ask those who have seen it "what was your instant impression - what struck you right off the bat?" and listen to them discuss it. Fun stuff.
Thanks again for your impression.

How did you find the comfort level?? I could never get comfortable in my 997S on long drives and had problems with my legs falling asleep, also hated that there really isn't a usable armrest, the 991 interior armrest looks higher up??
Good write-up, thanks for taking the time. I assume you mean PP. I'm scheduled to attend the launch on the 4th, so looking forward to seeing it. Given my GTS is less than a year old, I'm not planning on considering the 991 for a few years...until I see a WB version. I will admit that after driving a R8 a few months ago, I realized just how much more comfortable a sports car can be for DD. I assume the 991 helps bridge that gap, if not more. I enjoy driving my GTS every chance I get, but a more comfortable ride might get my wife out of my ear about how she can't stand to ride in mine. Although, she did admit that she enjoys DRIVING it.
Thanks Again.
Thanks Again.

@DallasCajun: Park Place has three. One is cleaned and waxed and on the showroom floor, front and center by the front door. The other two are on the service drive and are busily being sat in and driven by customers. I guess this is their plan. They let me take it without coming with me so I got to do things without asking. However, I wouldn't dream of hurting a car with only 40 miles on it.
@Eric: the interior on the three I saw were leather seats only. My last 997.2 had the Carrera Red interior which has upgraded leather, lots of it, even the back of the Adaptive Sports Seats. My current Panamera Turbo has full leather interior with lots of stitching. The interior on the three 991's was mostly vinyl and had no stitching. Other than the leather deficiencies, the switches, instruments, door panel sculpting, and dash/console shapes was Panamera level luxury and design. That's a step up from the 997 but the real step up is going to come on yours with the full leather interior. You will be impressed.

Two visual items will be apparent to any current owner - the new 911 is visually (not literally) heavier and the front bumper is wider - a lot wider. So the car has less of that narrow nose wide *** look. Whereas a 997 C4 looks like a cat on its haunches about to pounce on something, the new 991 looks more refined. IMO, the wider front bumper takes some getting used to.
