I had my first track experience today at Miller Sportspark in Utah. I started the day in the beginner (green) group, but was catching, lapping, and blowing by people like they were out for a Sunday stroll. The only car that was as fast as me was a modified GT-R with 700HP and a driver with previous track experience. He would gap me in the straights, and then I would close the gap again in the turns. For the final session my instructor told them I had to go to the advanced group ("red," bypassing "blue") because I was just too fast. He had me go to the front of the stagging area because he had to tell the tower I was switching. I thought I was going to get killed and wasn't too happy about starting first. Turns out the guy behind me in a 2009 CS took 20 minutes to close the few second gap out of the start. Nobody else caught us, and I still lapped a few people. The instructor said I had crazy raw tallent, but I think much of the success was due to this incredible car!!
I'm uploading video now to youtube and should have a link soon.
Luckly, the perma-grin isn't affecting my typing...

What kind of options do you have on your car?
ChuckJ
I have Sport-Plus, PDK, and Dynamic chassis control. Watching other cars look like they were going to tip over in the turns while I flew around them perfectly level was interesting....
but I'm glad you had fun.
who did you run with...i just checked their calendar and saw no car DE"s there today.

My instructor was having a blast, clapping and cheering when I nailed a turn. I believe on this video he does it around 1:20 as I come out of turn 10.
Here is a cut and paste of the email I got:
Let’s Drive – the Series!IRPCA runs 3 events at Miller Motorsports Park each year. There’s something for everyone: High Performance Drivers Education for general drivers and, for Club Racers, wheel-to-wheel races on MMPs full track.
· May 5 is the West half-track Drivers Ed event: safe and non-competitive (pass only on straights and only when the driver in front signals you). Recommended for everyone including drivers new to any track.
· June 8 – 10 is the Full 4.5-mile track DE & Club Race: you need some experience – on the East or West half-tracks – to run this. The same safe rules apply for DE, but Club Racers do it differently on Sunday!
· July 14 is the East half-track DE: on the last day of National 2012 Porsche Parade in SLC. Not officially part of Parade, but this is a unique chance to drive and enjoy MMP with people from all over the USA and even beyond!
Cost for a full day of classroom instruction and track time is about $200 – around half of what other organizations charge. Run Groups assure you’re on the track with drivers at your own level. Take your instructor with you on the track for tailored instruction! Go to www.irpca.org for requirements and links to register.

At 2:04 in the video above, is the back straight. Hit about 120mph and then you have to brake HARD for a tight hairpin. I couple times I waited until sign "2" and thought I was going to go off the track. The brakes on these cars are unbelievable. Never soft. Never faded.
I don't think he was anywhere near tipping over...but anyway..good driving and the car moves fast.
good first track to learn on....nice and flat with nice sweeping turns...and you hit all the marks

Although, like the instructor said, he needs to get much closer to those apexes. And smoother application of the throttle after the apexes would be good too. But still, a good first day.
Not bad at all.
I will post the video with the GT-R soon, and then a video from my last session, where I was closer to the apexes and going faster.
