Longer term 991 owners..
I read it differently, that you need to push the 991 harder to get the same thrill as the 997, not that the 991 necessarily thrills more than the 997 when both are at the limit. But since I can't currently drive either car at the limit, it will be a while before that matters for me.
To hit that performance level you need to really sent it in. When you do you can you drive at a speed and level you are not accustomed to. I believe this leads to a higher "thrill"
Now... sensory feedback in the 997 might make it such that the thrill is always better there...but i would like to compare the two at higher driving levels to make the final conclusion.
Bull****:
Poor:
Questionable:
- Radio is always on. This is inexcusable. Won't go into it since there is another thread on that topic already.
Poor:
- The manual. It's high on auto-generated, insulting-to-humans boilerplate text, has very little utility and seems just a carrier for all kinds of stupid warnings. It's impossible to find information quickly and there is no PDF version that might be searchable at least, which in 2012 is just plain lame. The quick-reference cards on the other hand are OK.
- PCM. Feels like 1995, ages behind say the iPhone and Google Maps (searches must be in canonical form otherwise stuff won't be found, etc.); touch screen is slow, I constantly have to press either harder or longer; pressing 2 numbers in rapid succession doesn't work, touches are not remembered (e.g. inputting "11" gives you only "1")
Questionable:
- Console tray doesn't fit an iPhone. There is no good place to place an iPhone, which is a bummer. Should've thought about it. The small tray is just a tad too narrow, so iPhone falls out and gets lost under the seats.
- Rattling. I've had weird rattling noises sounding at different times like loose windows, metal parts, plastic rubbing. Shouldn't be in a $100k+ car, not even after 5 years. Having said that, they change over time, so may be temperature dependent.
I believe the 991 has the chassis and suspension to provide more performance. (cornering speed, mid turn speed, apex speed, straight ahead speed..however you wish to define it.)

Porsche 991
I have had 11 Porsche 911's over the years and this 991 is by far the sweatest of the all, including my past GT-3's. I just did a 600 mile trip through Vermont's back roads and with the optional Sport Plus PSAM this corners better that my '10 G-3 and got 26 MPG. The only thing I have not yet got used to is the E-brake, otherwise all the electronics including the standard Nav works great.
2000 miles here!
Cons:
no decent place to plug in radar
agree no good place to put phone
agree would be nice to push a start button
really need to get past 6k rpms to feel car come alive (I guess I miss my old turbo)
Pros:
Multiple personalities
Great DD
PSE
Paddles
PDK
Improved stance (IMO)

I see what you mean now, and I agree. Sheer speed is certainly its own kind of thrill, though I prefer more the sensory feedback kind of thrill. Partly because speed is inherently dangerous, with risk increasing roughly with speed squared, not just in proportion to speed (part of my job is to evaluate and design highway safety features). Really, pretty much any decent sports car made these days can deliver enough raw speed for my needs (ie, wants).

I am with you Manifold, if " it takes dangerously high speeds and maneuvers to get adrenaline going ... perhaps that is the wrong direction for a true sports car. If that is what we are talking about (difference between 997 and 991), piping in "raw" engine sound, isolating the driver from the action sounds to me the things I can do without. Perhaps spending 5K on a racing kart or a Ducati SS Corse 944 racing bike will get one's pucker going harder and quicker and... much cheaper. The latter is what I did... It is yellow and it's sound is AWESOME as-is ( I know ... it does not have leather ruffled interior or a Bermester but it does have a back seat that accommodates a complete grown-up)! Picture shows the yellow color...That is my new toy, at least until the new G&T come out next year.

We all need to think about whether we're really comfortable with doubling and tripling speed limits, or doing well over 100 mph on the track ... because that's what these cars are designed to do, easily.
Autocross is also an option which I recommend. Gives you a feel for what your car is like at the limit, while taking little risk.

Congrats on the Ducati. I've been toying with the idea of getting a motorcycle (had a dirt bike when I was a kid), but cars have been getting my motoring attention, plus it seems that there's more risk with bikes, and my family seems to prefer having me around.

I had a 08 997 before this car ... a lot has already been said so I will highlight the Majors for me. First I have to say, this car is just awesome, I really feel like it is 2 steps ahead of the 997 I had.
AWESOME:
PSE - This is the best feature of the car IMO ... I am addicted to listening to it gurggle especially right when you let off the throttle and it is revving down
Engine: Just sounds awesome even without PSE, I love when it just starts up, it makes such a beautiful sound
Manual Trans: Excellent Stick shift, one of the best I have ever had
Speed: My god this car is insanely fast
Ride: How can it get any better then this !!! Comfortable when you want it yet handles incredible
Wouldn't mind a change:
Emergency Brake - Please put it in a better spot like Audi has, it is so annoying and I have to use it all the time having a Manual Trasmission
Fake key for starting - agreed please give me a button
Keyless lock- again what is with the button on the door handle, I love how Mercedes & BMW you just touch your finger to it to lock the car
Auto stop start - I use it herre and there & it just feels too weird plus I always feel like the guy next to me at the light thinks I stalled out my car.
Phone mode: Should automatically switch to phone mode when you get an incoming call on the PCM (maybe there is a setting for this)
Iphone compartment: Would like a place to easily keep my iphone
Overall this car is incredible and even the negatives aren't bad

Need a "wanna go?" mode for you MT guys... Turns PSE on and revs the car to 7000 on start.
