Not sure about sport Chrono
Not sure about sport Chrono
I'm ordering 911S PDK. Unsure if I really want or need Sport Chrono. This car is for weekends and fun driving. It is not a daily driver. Nonetheless, I am not taking it on track. But at times I may want to push the edge. Does anyone NOT get sport Chrono?
I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone wouldn't want it. The dynamic engine mounts make for a sportier yet more comfortable ride and PSM intervention is wound back (though not altogether prohibited) when activated.
What's more, on resale the dealer will screw you because PDK cars "need" SC. Which is a myth, because having the ability to drive in Sport Plus auto mode is utterly pointless when you can achieve the same with the paddles.
And on that point. Do get the paddles.

I'll go the other way a bit and say it is not absolutely needed. My dealer has more than a few cars with PDK and no SC. With the new sport button standard a lot of what SC used to do (997.2) is already there. With the 997.2 SC along with PDK was very important, much less so with the 991,...and dealers could really care less now. In fact many look upon it as a $2400 albatross because many potential owners won't even care about launch control and would be scared to death with SC+ in automatic.
I've driven serveral 991's with and without SC and the DMEs are not very noticeable with street driving. Yes they would be very important to have for a few more 10ths in a track environment, but again not absolutely necessary. The car feels great with or without them.
Now having said the above, I will be ordering my 991 with SC (and PDK) as I am a pretty hard Porsche enthusiast that will be doing some track, and will need the relaxation of PSM sometimes. So for me it will be useful and used, but for 90% of others it will be wasted $$$.
As for the paddles,....really tough choice with the 991 as the multifuntion wheel is also a good choice with the new PCM, it does so much with it. I've driven 991s with the paddles and thumb switches,...paddles are awesome, but I actually didn't dislike the thumb switches as much as I thought I would. I'm still undecided here.

I tend to agree with Rocket_Boy. The question is not do you need it, but more do you want it. I have it. I am sure I will never use launch control. The best reason to have it is the magnetic engine mounts which are just cool and the analog clock which I just like the look of. Useful except on a track? You could ask the same of sport plus but I would still want it. If you are not going to track your car, it is likely a waste, but there are far more ridiculous things to waste money on, like that ugly lime/gold paint option! JMO on the paint.
I would suggest getting it. I watched a beautifully specked GT3 sit on a lot for over a year just because it did not have the new adjustable engine mounts.
This may not make that big of a difference on the 991 but it certainly did on the 997.

All really good input and appreciated. Would be interested in more views. I'm close to ordering the car and this is about the last thing I'm on the fence over. On my test ride the sport mode was plenty entertaining and the sport+ was over the top so I didn't imagine really using it on the street and if I wanted the high revs I figured I'd just use the manual mode of pdk. I dont plan on using launch mode ever. I'll be ordering a cab if that make a difference. I didn't drive a cab and I also assumed that I wouldn't need or want the extra exhaust noise in a cab. . The sound of the standard exhaust was just fine.

I ask because I will be facing the same issue with SC in the near future. It seems to me that Porsche has been the unwitting beneficiary in having buyers step up for certain technical options and make many aesthetic decisions about their cars based upon re-sale considerations rather than what they need or really want.
Can you explain exactly what PDK advantage is lost if the car is not tracked or street-raced?

That's my point. Why would I want great engine mounts? Are the standard engine mounts inadequate for street driving? For $2,400 I can get a really nice wrist watch
