Completion date

Just got an email from the dealer saying my car should be completed 10 Jan. So he is thinking it will be here end of Jan to early Feb. Wow, after waiting so long after selling my 997 I never thought this happen. I'm thinking he is being optimistic with the end of Jan for delivery. if its finished on 10 Jan, then sent to port, then a couple weeks on the ship, then in port again, then on a truck to Cleveland I'm thinking at least the first week of Feb, maybe later. What do you guys think? I know there can be delays at each port.
Also I don't have a production date yet so it seems strange to have a completion date without a start date... Or is that normal???

If I would like to guess, probably the dealer will have the car between 4 to 6 weeks after production. Delays could be delay at Emden waiting for a ship,10 day ocean transit time, then customs, inspection, printing up Window Sticker and then trucking to dealer. Should be the second to third week in February.

I think you save a week if closer to east coast..so yes, it could be 4 weeks (1month) or so but 3 weeks is way too optimistic...

They only give scheduled completion date, not start date. They crank these cars out pretty fast anyway, so wouldn't be much difference.

$ weeks to the East Coast is pretty normal. The big variables are the ship schedule and the weather in the North Atlantic in the winter. I would plan on 4-6 weeks that time of year.

Sounds like the group is with me that the dealer is a bit off thinking end of Jan. so I'll mentally prepare for mid Feb and be pleasantly surprised if it comes in earlier. I just called and added an option to the car yesterday so it seems my order is not locked but I'm guessing it will be soon.

My wife and I visited the Zuffenhausen factory in late September. The guide advised that it's about 7 days from start (assembling body panels together) to drive away.

Depending on the option you added, it may slip production date in my experience, no matter what the salesman says.

Hopefully not the case for you.

I just made a small addition to my order, due for production on January 16 and the salesman did advise that even though lock in hadn't happen any addition from now on could change production date.

I did make a change. He didn't mention a production date change so I'm hoping my change was early enough. Guess we will have to wait and see. In this day and age of computers you would think you could make changes much closer to the production date without causing an issue but It seems that's not the case. I can understand Porsche wanting it locked in time to get everything in order to build your car but 2 months out seems like a long time. That said I think I'll be happy once it's locked so I can stop obsessing over any other changes!!

Part of the issue is that all these parts/pieces (or most of them) are sourced outside and really the car is assembled from parts on the production line. Porsche does not make many of the individual pieces themselves. They are using "just in time" production with the necessary parts arriving no more than 10 hours before needed in assembly. They have to coordinate all this with their suppliers also. They just don't "inventory" very much at all. Even the body panels are sourced outside and assembled/welded by Porsche.

Good to know. This is widely adopted practice in the industry. Minimum inventory is critical for financial health.
