Steering problem

I was wondering if anyone has experienced a problem with feeling the steering mechanism " skipping" or "popping" when making a sharp turn at very low speeds. I notice it pulling in and out of parking spots; when it skips, the whole car jerks. It seems to be worsening over the last couple days.

Any thoughts?

It could be the tires and not the steering. When it gets colder the rubber compound will get harder and not stick to the road, try and see if this happens on a warmer mid afternoon day and after a drive where you got more heat in the tires.

I experienced the same in my 997.2 tt and then realized that it was only on very cold days where the car was parked outside on a parking lot and the tires and surface was very cold.

I would guess your tires are scrubbing / skipping. It's normal with a wide tire at low speed and sharp turns. I purposely try to avoid them and make as wide a turn as possible, such as when parking.

It's the tires. That "problem" when away when I switched my 20inch wheels for 19 inch wheels with winter tires.

Good thought. Mine do that, but so has every other wide tired car I've had and I may just be used to it. I think the steering geometry is such that one tire's turning angle is actually a little different than the others during very tight steering, causing it to build traction, then release when it can't hold it any more.

Great thoughts, thanks. You may very well be right, it's certainly more noticeable now that it's cold.

No, fester, I don't have power steering plus.
