GoPro Hero2
Fellow 6speeders
In anticipation of the arrival of my new 911 I was thinking about purchasing the GoPro Hero2. I will be using it primarily to record canyon and mountain road driving and was wondering about my options. I've looked at a few videos on YouTube of the GoPro mounted on the windshield and the clarity was not too good. Is this typical? It may not be terribly pracitical to mount it on the side of the car as it may attract undue attention. What is your experience?
Thanks

Funny you should mention video machines. I was looking at the gopro black edition and the contour+2. The amazon reviews of the gopro be were just terrible. Anyone own that item or the contour+2?
go pro
I've used mine mainly for track events but from inside the car. I like that option because it takes in gauges, steering wheel (i.e. any goof moves I do with steering input) and the track thru the windshield. I haven't really had any issues with clarity through the windshield but its probably different trying to take in canyon and mountain views vs. just a plain track.

Rennline.com sells a nice tow hook + GoPro base combo that I use for track days (the pic shows a GoPro2 case, but you could as well attach a GoPro3 case)

Most of the time, I am using 2 GoPro2's: one inside the vehicle (attached to the roll bar) and one attached to the tow hook. I also have an old GoPro1 that I occasionally attach to the car with the suction cup. I never lost it, whether it is at 150+mph or slamming the brakes.
I tried the GoPro3 for a day 3 weeks ago and brought it back to the store. Despite the firmware update, it kept freezing and overheating. It was the 'black edition'. I have been told by other forum members that the white and silver editions were OK though. Maybe I was unlucky, but I found a lot of people complaining about the same issues on GoPro forums and the store was kind of 'OK, another GoPro3, no problem we'll take it back'.
If you have an iPhone, you might as well want to buy a RAM mount with suction cup on Amazon and use your iPhone as camera with Harry's Laptimer Pro... or simply in camera mode.

I just picked up the Hero 3 Black Edition today. In hindsight, I probably would not have gotten the H3 BE. Maybe the cheaper $199 silver/white or an older model. Here are my mini review from 1st day playing around. Take w/ grain of salt, only been a few hours.

The picture quality is fine for me, just the sound is horrible w/ the wind and road noise. Need to figure out if there are ways to improve the sound...

My favorite part of the hero 3 is the live wifi video feed to my mounted smartphone in the cabin with full control of the camera as well! Just awesome

Need a special mount or added protection for your GoPro? The folks at REDROCK MICRO http://store.redrockmicro.com/Cobalt have the solution for you. Their cages provide the ultimate mounting ability and protection for all of the GoPro models. I am not associated with REDROCK MICRO in anyway, but have used their products with great satisfaction. You can purchase their mounts either direct or through Pro Photo Stores like B&H Photo online.
The biggest advantages of the Hero3 are that they are smaller and lighter than the older models and offer more frame-rate/resolution. For $199 you could also pick up a White edition Hero3 at BestBuy or one of the big-box stores - this gives you the sizing and form-factor of the newer cameras, but doesn't have the options you get on the Silver or Black models.
Below is a 1080p/30fps video shot during the Porsche World Roadshow held at Sonoma Raceway this past weekend.
The camera was a Contour Roam2 mounted on the passenger's helmet. I think he got it for $175 on Amazon during a sale a few months ago.
To get the 1080p play, click play, then select 1080p, then check full screen, make sure to replay from the beginning, otherwise the video seems to stay on 480p.
Youtube compresses the video, the original has even more detail and the color is also slightly better.
