I Feel Obliged to Look at

the new Corvette Stingray. I just sold my '07 C2S, and I have a 50th Anniversary on order. I'm a weekend sports car driver; this will not be a DD nor will it be a track star. I haven't owned an American car since a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee when we lived in the Snow Belt, and I must say that car was built like crap. All of my cars, with that one exception and a Jetta diesel I use for hauling, have been one of the three German premium brands.

Now comes the new Stingray, and it has my attention. I think it has excellent aesthetics -- very Ferrari-like. The marketing hype is playing up the improvements in the interior fit and finish, particularly the seating. Obviously, the performance numbers speak for themselves. It remains to be seem if it has a civilized side as the last Corvette I drove about 10 years ago was rough riding and cheesy. It also remains to be seen if I can banish the gold chain connotation from my memory.

I don't really care that much about image any longer (I probably did at one time, to be honest), and now that I can afford anything I want, I have an instinctual aversion to getting ripped off. Chevy is very likely making very little on a car like this @ $65,000; Porsche is perhaps the most profitable car manufacturer in the world making a killing on every Carrera S. I do resent how they charge some absurd prices for mundane options (stitching, painting key fob, etc.) and refuse to supply base cars with quality standard features, e.g., the audio system.

Conventional wisdom is that these two brands are not cross-shopped either because the personality profile of the typical buyer is so different or because the handling characteristics and perceived quality is so different. Is it possible that the old paradigm will shift with the C7?

I forgot to mention one can actually fit a set of golf clubs in the Vette. That's nice.

There's a multi-page discussion about the new Stingray here that covers this subject well:

Yes, I read it. I'm just adding my $.02. By not responding in the previous discussion I plead guilty to wasting thread. If the new Vette lives up to its early billings, this won't be the last discussion, either.

Ok, so I apologize for being redundant. Now, I expect every future discussion on PSE, PASM, exterior color, "must have" options, discount on purchase price, 2S vs. 4S, break-in period, etc., etc. to also come with an apology. One good thing about forums: reading every thread in not mandatory.

C7 is going the be a great car, definitely best bang for buck out there.

Edmunds just put down 411whp and 407rtq on the dyno.

You don't have to have a gold chain, a pinky ring, pony tail or exposed hairy chest will do.

Actually I really like the looks of the new vette and I can certainly understand why someone would want to consider it. If they drive like people say and the new one is as nice on the inside as I have read you could do a lot worse for a car.

Buy what you like.

Didn't mean to offend you - just pointing out that originality isn't a prerequisite to posting from what I can see.

It's likely that the availability and pricing of the new Corvette in Europe may detract from its apparent bargain status, and in that case this topic may not have international appeal. On this side on the pond, people are creating a run on wife beaters in anticipation of arrival in the showroom.

I'm not a big fan of American cars, but I think the new 'Vette looks pretty nice. I'm not going to get one, but still looks nice. Get what you want. The only person you need permission from may be your significant other, not the forum.
