Instrument Cluster Removal
Instrument Cluster Removal
Would anyone know the steps required to remove the instrument cluster? I have something rattling behind it (sounds like something small and light rattling around) and I'd rather see if I can tackle it myself, before taking the time to take it to the dealer, who will inevitably say they can't duplicate the noise anyway.
Many thanks in advance.

Just a caution... And maybe not even warranted but I've become paranoid about instrument clusters..
I don't know if this is the case for the Porsche clusters.. But I had a problem on an audi TT cluster and when you mess with it there is an immobilizer function.. If I recall, as long as you don't swap the cluster you are ok... I just remember there were some funkly things associated when you disconnected and could require the dealer to reprogram.. presumably to prevent you from tampering with odometer or other stored information..
May be no issue here, but my suggestion is that I would do a little research before disconnected anything to prevent having to tow the thing to a dealer..

I'm sure as long as you don't unplug anything it's fine.. It's just sometimes there isn't enough service loop.....
Unfortunately, I've never removed a dash without causing more problems in terms of rattling, (again not with Porsche's so YMMV ) so I'm hesitant to mess with it mechanically unless it were absolutely necessary..

I'm going to have my instrument cluster removed as soon as I receive a replacement dial face for my tach. I am changing out the stock alum look tach dial to black. I should have more info in the next few days. I'll post then

I have done it already, proceeded carefully, disconnected the instrument cluster, opened it etc. There was no DIY for the 991 at that time and I followed a 997 DIY that was close enough. You have to be REALLY CAREFUL, but it can be done. There was no issue after everything was put back in place.
This being said, your car is still under warranty, let the dealer take care of it...

easy
remove the trim where you insert your key. ( pull it out )
so you can access the trimp piece around the cluster. ( pull it out carefully )
*** if you break some taps it's ok... it will not make noise anyway. it's soft rubber. ***
pull up the trim piece above the steering wheel column.
then you will see some bolts
there are 4 bolts ( 2 at the top 2 at the bottom )
simply removal it and you are able to get the cluster out.
don't worry about disconnect the cluster. as long as you disconnect the battery everything will be fine.
even there is fauld code shown just find a shop with piwis and clean it up dealer won't find out anyting ... millage storage in other modules too, if you want to mess that i guess this is not the only place you need to take it out lol
