any short term lease on 991?

Hey folks,

I am thinking to go over to LA for a long stay. Probably 3 to 6 months. I am thinking to pick up a used 991 CS and then sell it when I leave. I am guessing if I put down 5k miles within 6 months. I'd probably get 5k ~ 7k depreciation. Would the insurance be high for a Canadian? I am 30 and I have no credit in the states. I just search on cars.com and they still go pretty high. 100k used?

You can find websites that specialize in cars that have a few months left on their leases.
A lot more practical and would address what you are trying to accomplish.

Wouldn't want to break protocol by posting the names here.

5k deprecation? You'll lose more than that. What about hitting lease trader or swap lease and assuming someone's lease who only has 6 Month or so left? It may be a 997 though.

I picked my 991 up in February. The sticker was 106k and I did a 24 month lease. Last month for the hell of it I asked them to run numbers on a c4s. I have 6,000 miles and they offered me 77k for a trade in value.

By the time you bought and sold, paid taxes in California and register the thing it's gonna cost you at least 10-15k.

Why not just do a long term rental of a 991 from HERTZ? They have PCARS in their rental fleets.

Two things, I think the Hertz P Car rates start around $2-300 per day! On the insurance you will have to approach several companies in California for quotes. You might be able to carry your safe driving record from Canada if you can prove it in writing to the US company (it does work the other way often). No matter what you do you'll have a significant depreciation hit on a car that's less than 2 years old if you only keep it 6 months. What about bringing it back to Canada after 6 months? If you buy a used 991 that is very much an option. You might also find you'll need to get a California driver's license to register a car in California. Check with their MV department.

Snowczar, Thanks for all the nice information. This is one reason why I like this forum so much. Do you know if we can convert our BC's license to CA's? I checked their DMV and I find them quite lousy. I either need a working visa or student visa in order to apply i think. Nice color combo 991 you have there.

california requires sales tax to be paid on the price at time of transfer-- $95k will come out to $7-8k in taxes. registration is about 1% of the price paid.

it would be a very expensive 6 months. figure the lease deals from porsche on new '13 c2 were about $1000/mo for 10k miles/yr. Plus there was the registration, fees, etc.

in the end...good luck

It is my understanding that you have to apply for a new CA license. Virtually no jurisdictions share driver's licenses. These are a state thing in the USA and Provincial in Canada. If you are only visiting why would you need a CA license anyway if you're essentially a tourist? You just need to watch out for the number of days you are in the US for any reason. If you are there over 180 days in any one year you must, repeat must file a US tax return where you elect to have a "Closer Connection" to Canada than the US. Fine for non compliance can get into 5 figures if they get sticky. Every time you cross the border into the US the US government does track how much time you spend down there.

Oops, another thing. I see you show yourself as being in Taiwan. If this is a case and you don't have landed immigrant or similar status in Canada I would expect you'd have to check out the issues of long term stay for Taiwanese resident.

On the car side only the DMV in California can tell you what you need to do.
