Techno Wheels, aftermarket Black?
Techno Wheels, aftermarket Black?
Anyone had their Sport techno wheels painted in the aftermarket?
Nice but the $1,600 extra for painted is pretty steep. I'm guessing this could be done in the aftermarket pretty cheap?

Wheel Enhancement (310) 836-8908 told me they paint the ST wheels. I called them for a price on a set of ST wheels. I also got a price from them to refinish my SIII wheels in Titanium.
Interestingly, they said you cant buy Black ST wheels, so if you did not order the car with them you need to get them painted.
Based on their prices $1600 to have Porsche paint them is not that bad, if you have not ordered your car yet.

We've done them, and it's a real PITA. If I had to do it again, we'd charge $1600-1800
When I originally went to go get them done for my client, no one would touch them because it's extremely hard and labor intensive to get a clean line on the spokes.
I found a place that said they'd do it, but it'll be 80% perfect. They wanted $1800
So I did it myself. The car is back from its last detail done 6 months ago. We're re-doing them to make them better.
So, it can be done. It's going to cost you though. In grand scheme, small price to pay...they retail for $6-7K

I paid $1,000 which included refinishing one of the wheels due to curb rash to have my sport techno wheels painted red. My best guess is wheel painting alone about $800 of that. The "wheel" place had no issues with the painting and even did the non logo part of the wheel caps red! As well they did higher polish on the shiny parts of the wheels.
Were you happy with the outcome? Has it held up well?

Thanks all.. The $1600 just seemed like a lot for this.. I still do.. but as with any Porsche option it's pricy..
But I'm also guessing getting these done aftermarket isn't as straightforward as I would have assumed. Sounds like I could beat the $1600 but not by that much and I still have the hassle of having it done. Guess if I go this way (black techno) I'll get as an option..

It's now about 3500 miles on the painted wheels and they are holding up extremely well. When I had to replace a tire I had the dealer use Guards red touch up paint to colour the new wheel weight on the rim's inside. Only thing is that I have a few very small rock chips in the red on the rears but then these will be easy to touch up either with the factory touch up paint or the spare paint the wheel shop gave me. I did specify Guards red as the colour for the painting.
Thanks all.. Sounds like I could get them done after, and possibly save a couple of bucks. but it just seems like a hassle.. So I'm just going to order them painted..
No it isn't trivial.. But in addition to my time/hassle my car will be down.. so since it is my DD.. more hassle..
And it sounds like it is a YMMV solution..

Let me just say, powdercoating and refinishing a stock sport techno wheel are two different things. A LOT of time goes into prep work of masking off to have super clean lines. Then, you gotta make sure to paint it properly with no overspray. A lot more involved than some might think. Hence why there are few people, if any, that want to take on this task aftermarket.
You made a smart move to order from factory!!

Here is the process we went through:
Initial wheel sanded and prepped

Wheel taped up for Porsche Schwarz Black 041

Painted accent black

Clearcoated

As I wanted the shiny parts "skimmed" to be made more shiny I'm sure they didn't mask but painted everything then skimmed the paint of the "shiny" parts which would have been easier. Having said all that, had the option of having wheels painted "deviating colour" by the factory I would have paid that quickly to have it all factory. I think scatkins made the right decision.
