dealer playing game or is it me?
In the MT is there any kind of protection to prevent an over-rev (above redline) on an unintended, severe downshift? Even if the electronics cut the spark, mechanically if you drop down 4 or 5 gears at a high rate of speed/RPMs, the gear change could spool up the RPMs into the 8-9,000 range pretty quickly, yes? Would be nice if they could somehow electronically refuse to let the clutch engage until either the RPMs and/or a different gear permitted a safe downshift.
That's a great question. A buddy and I were actually talking about that a few weeks ago. I honestly don't know if our 911s have a safety feature that would essentially prevent that from happening; although, like you stated, it would be difficult to prevent the mechanical engagement from occurring.

Consensus was improper downshifting was a major culprit .
Agreed, but I think that was the actual question: whether the 991 MT has a feature that would essentially prevent the car from over-revving or engaging a gear when the driver downshifts into a gear that would yield too high of an engine RPM (basically going from 5th to 2nd instead of 5th to 4th, for example).

That's what I was leaning toward, so that's good to know. A friend who drives a 335i swears that all current-day manuals have a "protective" feature as described above.
I'll tell him what's up and see his face turn into a "
."
