New wheels or not!?!
New wheels or not!?!
I'm not having the best luck with tires. i have a 2013 base with 19" i wanted the classics, but during my search i was not able to get one with 20".
so during the past 6 months i've always had 20" envy.
the first 200 miles of driving i got a bulge in the side wall of my front passenger tire. took it to the dealer and of course, got no love and had to buy a new tire for $330 or something like that.
now 5000 miles later i developed a slow leak in the rear passenger tire. i have to fill it up with air about once a week. thought it was a nail, so i took it into a local tire shop, and with my luck they said it looks like about a dozen small hole on the inner area of my tire.
so...my dilema is....this is a leased car with a total avail miles of 20,000.
so i can get new AG m510 with michelin pss..drive for about 13,000 miles.
then put on oem wheels and tires back on... fill it with a can of fixaflat, drive for 2,000 miles and then return my lease.
my logical thinking is i will need to buy a new set of tires before i return my lease. if i buy new wheels and tires i can enjoy them now, later i can still sell just the wheels/tpms and recoup majority of my investment on the wheels.
does this this seem like a logical plan or should i just buy 2 new rear tires now and then 4 new tires at about 15,000 miles, and then return my lease?

the silver 911 is m510 in 21"...i would be getting 20" in gun metal, my 911 being red would look similar to this red vorsteiner 911.
if the wheel gap is too great, i have h&r spring in my garage.

Love the wheel design, but it's all a matter of how much money you want to spend. Sure, the cost of the wheels is recoverable, but it will be a hassle listing, selling, and delivering them. Keep that in mind.
If it's a lease and you're returning it in a year or two, it may not be worth it IMO. How much longer is left?

16 months and 15,000 miles. yes it would be a hassle. i think someone will buy a used set of wheels and use it for winter wheels.
if my calculations are correct:
keeping oem 19"
2 new rears=$800 now
4 new tires=$1500 at 15,000 miles
new 20" $3000 with tires, sell for $1000...this means tires would have cost me $2000...i'm gonna be spending about $2,300 in tires if i keep my oem 19"
i would actually save money by buying new wheels and tires. does anyone else follow my logic or am i just trying to justify new wheels here!??! =)

I have the opposite desire. I WANT a set of 19" wheels for track use on my 991S. I'm just starting to shop around.

Selling wheels can be tricky and you may end up shipping them to the buyer for a big $$ amount. Even if you ask the buyer to cover the shipment, there is only so much he will be willing to pay for a set of used wheels.
I have purchased and resold quite a few aftermarket parts for my cars, and wheels (or wheels +tires!) have either been the most difficult to get rid off or the parts on which I lost the most money.
Just my 0.02.

Lots of people buy wheels for their lease cars.
If you lease a 911 again you can reuse those wheels.
Otherwise, sell them, but the depreciation is 50% on wheels and 70-100% on tires and TPMS.
I sold my OEM wheels with tires & TPMS at 30% of new cost.
Also, Goodyear should be pro-rating your tires, if they are defective.
You might want to pursue that either way.

Thanks, i might just take this to the dealer to see if i can pursue that route.
I actually thought everyone would say go for the new wheels...now my decision just got harder. hahaa.

I say get new wheels even though it's a lease, so long as the hit you will inevitably take on the wheels won't make you crazy. Before my C2S, I drove an E93 M3. I made a big mistake and ordered the car with the standard 18" rims. Every time I saw a M3 drive by with 19"s, I got wheel envy. So about 6 months into my lease, I bought a set of 19"s (I used the 19"s in the summer and the 18"s in the winter). I put the 18"s back on before I returned the car, and sold the 19"s. Expect about a 50% hit on the wheels, and even more on the tires (mine were well-worn). It's a money losing proposition, but I was thankfully in position to make the move and didn't want wheel envy gnawing at me for the 2.5 remaining years on my lease.
Most 'bulges' in tires are caused by pothole strikes, and while not a warranty item per se, Michelin is very good about helping out on newer tires. I had one on my Porsche after 4,000 miles, took it to my local dealer (Porsche of Arlington) and as long as the tires are not worn down they replace the other three if you buy the one. So I got four new shoes for the price of a single $ 400 tire. Pretty good deal.
How can you have 'a dozen' small holes in your tire? That's very strange, did you run over a carpet tack strip or could it be warranty on defective tire? I'd go by my Porsche dealer and pursue a warranty claim, most they can do is say 'no'.

If you bulged out the 19" the 20" is less sidewall man more likely to bulge out. The tires on our cars are so wide, they tend to pick up all kinds of debris. I purchased the wheel and tire insurance and it has already paid for 2 new rear tires over the past year. Just 3 days ago I had a new rear put on at the dealer $467 for free thanks to the insurance. Check out ebay for an inexpensive set of wheels/tires. My opinion, since its a lease, you want to spend as little as possible on the car. All the best.
