Parking sensor sensitivity
Parking sensor sensitivity
It appears my parking sensor is "lagging" for about one second. Best described when parking and stop the car while yellow area is shown on the PCM screen, it changes to red after about 1 second while the car is still stationary. The same also happens with intermittent beep changing to continuous while car is stationary.....
Very annoying, especially with the large blind spot of the cabrio...
- Anyone else has the same issue?
- Is there anyway to adjust the sensor sensitivity?
Thank you

I think the amount of time it takes depends on the type of object and it would appear also depending on the distance.
I suspect the sensors and the associated software take a certain amount of time to discriminate that there really is an object. For example for a highly reflective large object it might be relatively quick. For a low reflective object and/or a pole bush it might take longer. Also I wouldn't be surprised if between yellow and Red it took longer as the distances are smaller and probably more processing to get a higher precision for the shorter distance.
I notice when backing out of the garage that the sense of the sides is very quick. as is the case when I have a truly large object. But if it is something smaller or not as well defined it can take a little bit longer.
I can't say I notice a full second.. but when I get yellow I'm usually moving quite slow and inching along as opposed to when it's green. If I had to guess I'd say it was more like a half second usually.

Note a lot of people complain about it being slow especially on the front and hitting low parking bricks, but I've always felt the sensors weren't really designed to pick up low objects like that.
Sensors are really just part of a solution and I tend to rely on them only for really tight parking situations when I'm moving very slowly..
For general backup (aftermarket) it would seem a backup camera is much more useful.
Only see the distance display in colors if you have the park distance assist or whatever it is called. if you have a rear-view camera, you see that in color as well.
yes, there are specified obstacle distances of green, yellow and red.. And red is pretty close if I recall.. within a few inches.. They show up graphically in color on the PCM for the sensor proximity when you are backing up or going slow.
And if you have a backup cam installed (I guess they are just now offering on the C and CS 911's) or the retrofit kits, the backup image is superimposed with the sensor data.
Here is a link to the online manual which may or may not be of use to you..

The Park Assist has be maligned by a lot of people in the forums.. Some claiming it doesn't show them low curbs, a few that it is slow..
The thing to keep in mind is it is call "park assist.." And i think where people get crossed up is that it is not necessarily intended as a general collision avoidance system. So in reality what it is best at is slowly moving yourself into tight locations such as parking spots. Good at detecting walls, large column, other cars.. etc..
And in reality my experience with it is that it is pretty good and I'm happy with it. (I have both front and rear) And I think when married with a backup cam the combo is pretty useful for most situation. Even a little more with the Cab, but my rear visibility sucks just as bad I think with a Coupe.
Where Porsche I believe does deserve criticism is for not having the backup camera as an option until this year, especially since it isn't a technical problem.. The PCM supports it, it's already available on the Turbos.. Just kind of rediculous you can buy a 130K car and not get a backup camera when one is available for free on a 18K toyota. That said it is finally available.

Yes, finally available, but too late to help my 50. Ridiculous is right.
