Dash cam for 911
Dash cam for 911
Looking at dash cams and some seem to be small enough to fit behind a rear view mirror. Anyone use one that they can recommend for being easy to use and unobtrusive? Also, how do you deal with the wiring issue? Near as I can tell the power outlet is I the glove box.
Hi Grunty,
I'm certainly not an expert but did a bit of research and decided on the following.
One of these:

And one of these:

Waiting for the UPC to come in. Current plan is to go behind the mirror and wire to passengers fuse box.

I have a Finevue CR500 on my other car. The Blackvue 550 is dual channel and gets good reviews too, I might be putting that on my 991. I did my research on dashcamtalk forums when I bought my first camera last year.
Thanks. Does that itronics unit fit behind the 991 rear view nicely? It's impossible to get a sense of size without scale references. Also, it is one of the pricier options out there, do you find it justifies it's value relative to its much less expensive peers? I am happy to spend the bucks if it's worthwhile. A lot of these units are poorly made Chinese items with bad build quality. The itronics appears to be South Korean.

I bought a Lukas a few years back. It is a bit on the large size, compared to what they have now. Picture quality is OK. I ran wire along the headliner and down the passenger side A pilar and used the passenger side power receptacle. Here are pics to give you a perspective on size. From the inside though, you really don't see it as it is hidden by the mirror.

From the inside you can barely notice it - it is to the right of the radar detector

Thanks to you both. The pics are helpful. The wifi aspect of the unit along with the iPhone interface seems to be a deal breaker for me over the Lukas which I think needs PC. The Lukas seems to have better image quality and may be a bit smaller.
This is like trying to figure out which options to get on a porsche.

I have this one, it's tiny and it mounted perfectly to my V1 Blendmount and used the V1 Key Hot line to wire it...

Go to http://dashcamtalk.com/ There is a wide spread on pricing and quality. One problem is being able to handle the heat from being next to the windshield and it's own operating temps.
