My C2 was "born" on May 31, 2012 and it was delivered at the Porsche store in mid June 2012. A PSE was added in the first 6 months.

Since delivery it has traveled 37,400 essentially trouble free miles. It is a pleasure to drive.

Engine:

Seemed to "open up" and become much more powerful at 20,000 miles. It was almost like a "switch" was thrown and the car "woke up." Dealer said that it takes up to 25,000 to full break in the car.

This is a base engine and it can be "scary fast"

The engine never seemed to experience the 2500 rpm hesitation problem reported by others.

PDK:

better than I expected. It's fun. I can "row" my MGB and I find that the PDK is more fun to drive.

Brakes:

Had some problems and Porsche paid for pads and rotors at 28000 I paid for labor.


Use:

It is my daily driver. I always wanted one and I drive it as much as possible. I am not "manufacturing" a perfect used car for some lucky buyer.



Tracking:

No

Commute:

10-11 miles depending on the route. Rural, rolling country roads to my office building.

Parking:

Siberia. Never anywhere close to others.

Gas:

I generally use Sunoco or Exxon 93 octane meaning about 95% of the time. I occasionally use Costco 93 or 92. I only fill at busy stations.

Mileage:

Combined highway/city mileage is 25.3 mpg. Highway mileage averages 33 mpg. I live in a rural suburb of Philadelphia.

Oil:

This seems to be a much discussed topic. I've used Mobil 1 0w-40. The initial change of oil and filter was at 1,500 miles and at 4,500 mile intervals thereafter. The engine consumed just less than 1 quart in the first 5,000 mies and has not consumed any oil since (at least that I could notice using the electronic dip stick). I replace the oil plug at 10,000 mile intervals - it's cheap and I want to preserve the threads on what looks like a real lightweight oil pan.

I generally change the oil at the 5s and let the dealer change it at the 10s thereby "fulfilling" the warranty obligations by having a verifiable third party do that service.

The Single Misfire:

One morning around a year ago when i turned the key it misfired. I tried again, and it started. Dealer check it, saw the misfire recorded and cleared it after checking the system. Never repeated.


Tire:

PZero tires lasted 27,000 miles and were replaced with Michelin Super Sports. I selected the 305 width for the new rear tires. I use the fully loaded comfort setting for air pressure.

Winter tires: 19 inch Porsche wheels with Sottozero II tires. This will be my third winter with these tires. They're ok and the sole benefit of winter tires is that I can drive on cold dry days.

Snow driving:

Nope and not because the car can't. I am concerned by the local "cowboys" driving their SUVs who do not appreciate that stopping is more important than accelerating.

Maintaining:

I wash the car by hand. I usually wash it at least 2x a week. I use fuzion wax and clay the finish about once every two months. I have a Flex and occasionally use it with Chemical Guys mirror finish product.

The paint appears new, it's flawless,

There is a clear bra on the frunk and fenders. It was adequately applied, not great but it works. Dealer refunded the cost.

Disasters:

Small crease on rear passenger fender caused by stone: removed by dent remover. It was magic.

Driver's front wheel damaged: Tire and Wheel insurance finally replaced after the wheel restorer painted the wheel the wrong color.

Passenger front tire: total loss when the top of a hanger punctured the brand new Michelin tire... Tire and Wheel insurance replaced.


Driving Experience

My first Porsche. It's not as I imagined. It's better.

Love your write up. I also buy a 911 to use it, not keep it pristine for the second owner. Having said that, of course I baby the sh## out of mine and they are kept perfect. I also noticed my S just kept getting better with more miles (I got to 20K before trading to the TTS). Congrats on a great Porsche.

the tires actually had 4/32 left in tread. I usually replace before 3/32.

I did not track the car which may explain the tire longevity.

 

27k out of the PZeroes is unbelievable

20000 to fully break in the car? I think so. While I don't drive it like I stole it I do drive it hard. As I said, it seems like the engine reached its full potential after 20k, but, then again, what do I know? By that time I was used to how it accelerated, turned and braked. There were no big surprises and I was comfortable at high speed. After 20k it seemed to get noticeably faster...could be a break in, could be one of the numerous reprogramming or computer updates or, just my imagination...


It's dirty (well, most folks would think it was clean) and I will post photos probably tomorrow when I get a chance to wash it.



Tire comparison? Michelins seem to give a smoother ride, not as jarring. The seem as precise and do not jump at low speed when sharply turning

I have over 8k on them and have (as per my recent state safety inspection) 9/32 left on all tires with the exception of the replacement where i have 10/32

Are the Michelins better? Hard to say, they are certainly cheaper and have a better wear potential. Are the Pirelli tires worth the difference in cost? Not for me

Misfire? Yeah, it misfired just started and wasn't firing on all cylinders. I restarted it and it worked..hasn't had a problem since. Weird. Perhaps it was out the night before and drank too much beer. Never figured that one out but, it's a machine run by a computer..the code probably did not load properly.
