Dear Suburu WRX...
There was another thread regarding aggressive, less than courteous drivers, but this is directed at a specific make/model. One of the things that I've discovered with my 911, I generally drive the speed limit or a few MPH above. Highway, set the cruise at 68 and let it ride. On any given day there is a minimum of 1 Suburu WRX that will blow by me at high revs or they do the casual saunter up alongside me, a "I own you" stare, then drop it down a gear and punch it. Being that the weather is still nice out here, I usually have the windows down. I really don't notice any other cars doing so. BMW's, Audi's, they come along side and give a thumbs up, but never the Suburu churn and burn.
I get it, your exhaust is loud and I mean really, really loud. With all that extra HP created by the 2 1/2 inch tailpipes, it's gotta be awesome fast. There's nothing like anticipating the pull during your turbo lag. Check, got it.
Not that any or many Suburu WRX owners troll the 911 boards, but I just gotta say, you look like an idiot. I suppose the reason I've never responded in kind is that, hell, it's a Suburu and your actions are contributing to driving all of our insurance premiums up.

The funny thing is that I get that when I had a turbo back in the 996 days and I was immature enough to make them look like their cars are slow.
Another strange note is that when I had my GTR's no one ever think about racing me, just phone photos and when I pretend wanting to race people they look away
. Perhaps people feel all GTR drivers are immature and want to show how fast their cars go?

Actually, I think there is a cultural disconnect here. When I began driving in 1959, my normal activity was just as you describe that of the WRX drivers. The objective was to initiate an informal street drag race of limited duration until one of the drivers backed-off.
With a seriously rally-prepped 4-speed Volvo 444, I used to hunt nearly stock Ford and Merc flat-head V-8s and almost always walk-away from them above 80 mph. They did not typically distinguish between VW's and Volvos and were amazed at the results.
I had thought the practice was long gone until I began driving a 6-liter 6-speed GTO in 2005. I was regularly challenged. Typically, the challengers were highly amused to find the GTO driven by an academic type in his late 60s wearing a Harris Tweed sport jacket and a Brooks Brothers Oxford cloth shirt with a knitted tie who was not interested in competing. A friendly wave and they were on their way. I suggest the same when challenged by a WRX.
In stock form, WRX 0-60 times of around 4.6 seconds have been recorded by several major motoring magazines. Some number of WRXs have engine mods that seriously boost straight line performace. One of my recent Mechancial Engineering advisee graduates is operating a chasis dyno equipped shop that achieves amazing to me performance from WRX and similar turbo-charged Japanese engines. Don't be sure that a suitably prepared WRX would be no competition to a 991 in an informal drag race.
I recently drove a stock 2015 WRX and was impressed. It is certainly no 991, but offers a high level of usable street performace for the money. When the warranty on my current base 991 expires, a WRX with appropriate engine mods as a replacement is a possibility. The savings between it and a 991 replacment would make it possible for my wife and me to spend two or three post-retirement months per year in a rather nice apartment on the Île. St. Louis in Paris. Coffee in the morning with a view of the Seine and Notre Dame might cushion the lack of sophistication of the WRX while back in the States, particularly after performance upgrades.
Another perspective based on different driving experiences from that of many Forum members over the last fifty-five years.

It's not the cars, it's the drivers. Last moving violation, 1980. The trick is not to accept, or offer, the challenges. Perhaps we get smarter as we get older after all. My street racing days are long past, but I still remember them fondly.
The 911 attracts challenges without having to do anything ...
