It Won’t Make Any Difference If the Cayman Is Faster Than The 911
PLEASE! Those are not my words. That's the headline. I am diametrically-opposed (pun intended) to any model of Cayman being faster than a base 911, so please don't yell at me. Yell at the author of the article. I'm just the messenger.
The point he is making is that Porsche has already broken its unwritten rule by making the Cayman R faster than the base 911's. He's saying it doesn't matter. I agree.
Then again maybe it is addressed at the 991.2 update..
Or then again, as many have suggested maybe the 991 base won't exists and the C2/4S will effectively become the base.. Just a thought, given that if the turbocharged versions take over Porsche is going to need to do something product marketing wise to sort out how they want to sort out the Turbos...
Maybe the S's become the 991 entry point (which keeps them faster than the cayman R) and then the TT and TTS become branded somehow as the faster versions...
No clue Just a thought but I'm pretty sure when the turbo base and S come they need to revamp how the different variants are positioned otherwise they will have a mess marking wise..
Then again, if the S becomes the base they loose the higher margin 991 base to the caymans..
I always asked people this when they PM me about a 997 or a 981
1. Do you need the back seats?
2. Do you care what people think?
If you answer yes to any of the questions above, then the 911 is for you, if not, then the Cayman/Boxster is a better car. It looks better, it handles better, it's lighter, it's easier to drive. The author is spot on, unfortunately most people care what people think. 911 is an icon, a status symbol, it's what Porsche is known for, it doesn't matter if the Cayman/Boxster is faster. People will still buy a 911.

Yeah I don't need backseats (or whatever that unusable space is called in the back).. and in general I don't care what others think (well not all that much).
But I wanted a 911 not it's little brother.. Sometime the little brother is stronger and faster.. but it is still the little brother..

I always advise people to buy the car they like best, which gets them weak in the knees. Forget about hp, numbers and stats, car mags, forum banter. It is all BS !
I bought a 911 because I love it's look much much better than the Cayman, plus it's the car I always wanted since I was a young boy.
And no, I couldn't care less about how much hp or performance the Cayman (or any other car for that matter) has more or less than my car.

Well said !! I fell in love with the 991 when I saw it in person at the dealerships launch event. Just a gorgeous car inside and out for me. Definitely the car for me!
My 6 year old son does sit in the back seat regularly so it's the car we take on weekends as a family. So a Boxster/Cayman was not an option for me.
When it came time to replace my 3.6 997.2, I was contemplating waiting for the M4 to see what it was going to be like. Then I saw and drove the 991. Although the price difference is very significant, I didn't want to get the M4 (and it's a fantastic car) and then have regrets and think.
You only live once and I'm very happy with my Agate beast! I don't care that a Vette, GTR , etc are faster. That is just bragging rights. You also need to get a car that fits your personality and lifestyle and I can't think of a better car right now.

Well thank God I am the older brother.

Yes, I know, 911 is an icon, it has heritage, I have a poster of a 993 turbo and not a Boxster/Cayman growing up, you own part of history, it's a status symbol. I get it, I have one.
If you drive a 911 and then get into a 981, you will immediately feel the difference, it's a better driver's car. Mid engine, light, more nimble, easier to drive fast.

Well, you answer my question, you need the back seat. Looks are subjective, personally, I like the look of the 981, they look exotic, the 911, well looks like a 911.

Tell me this doesn't look better then a 997/991.
The Cayman looks stubby, the back end is not as nice, the roof line of the 991 is better and the Cayman is not available with a sunroof. No I prefer the 991 however I do enjoy my wifes 981.

It looks better? Wow. I stopped reading after that.

Good points but I'm not sure most would consider boxster or cayman a car that looks better than a 911.. That isn't to say they all aren't great looking cars...
And It's all subjective of course, but the 911(any era) is a stunning timeless design..... I can't imagine buying a 981 because I felt it more attractive

For me there is no contest. The 991 is sheer beauty. THE thing for me is the 991 hips. Everytime I ogle my car, it's the hips that set it apart from other cars. Everytime I wash it it's the hips that are my favorite part to wash.
The Cayman doesn't have hips. The Cayman doesn't even have an attractive *** like the 991 does.
Furthermore, the 991 in it's simplicity is sheer beauty in stock form. The Cayman to me is more boy racerisch, and only works when you tart it up with spoilers, gaping cooling holes and stuff like that.
You illustrate that yourself by inserting a pic of a Cayman GTS and a stock 991.
