PDK Overrevs

For those with PDK familiarity, is it possible to overrev the engine if I leave the PDK on manual and accelerate without shifting. I was in manual in heavy traffic and a clearing opened and I gave it the beans for about 3 minutes forgetting I'm in manual and not auto. The car beeped for some time apparently reminding me to shift but was oblivious since some else wanted my opening. After some time I realized my error and shifted over to auto. Does PDK automatically shift if a gear is too low for the engine load?

I do not know about PDK and revs however you can have the computer checked for overrevs. It will record them

Interesting didn't think that could happen, I would have thought it would have shifted at redline. I know one of my older Honda motorcycle pocket rockets actually shutdown when I missed a shift, quite unnerving to have a bike shutdown. Clutch out clutch in and restart.

You'll hit the cutout/limiter on the topside. I have done that. Can't say it ever occurred to me to try shifting to seventh when I should be in first or second.

should hit the rev limiter and it will hickup..........can happen when downshifting to first at too high speeds on tight/low speed curves

If you are in manual mode, the car will stay where you leave it when accelerating. If it goes redline, it will bounce off the limiter. This will get your attention as it sounds very different. It will not up-shift for you at all in manual mode. I've done this on street and track, is how I know.

The only exception to the car changing gears for you is when you are slowing down. The car will downshift as you slow to prevent it bogging. For example if you are in 6th at 50mph, the car will change down as it hits about 1200rpms or so for each gear.

I was in Sport/Sport + mode. I hope this answers your question.

Thanks for all the meaningful replies. I believe it did bounce off the rev limiter, my only confusion is the car just kept on accelerating past the maximum speed allowable for the initial gear. My gut feeling is that the car did redline and at some point PDK stepped in and up shifted. I'm trying to understand how the car kept going at a higher speed without PDK assistance, at least this automatic correction makes me feel a little better about my error in judgement.

PDK won't let you "overrev" and go past the redline (and gain any more speed). Hell, you can't even do that in our 7MTs unless you downshift incorrectly. You're good.

I had to have my PDK replaced. Was concerned that I did something wrong. Porsche service guy told me that you cannot damage PDK unless the rear wheels leave the ground. The computer will keep you from doing something stupid.

I have had it in Manual plenty of times...PDK will step in and change gears for you. I'm sure it takes it to the limit. Changes gears up and down, Big Brother Porsche lookin out for you. I have done this many, many times. I appreciate those German Engineers!!

Marc-
Can you share with us why you had to have your PDK replaced? Just curious, you know! From what I understand, the PDK as a unit is not "fixable" but is meant to be "replaced only" or in other words throw-away. Interesting to find-out the various causes....

If you've already covered this in another thread, can you remind me where I might find it?

Thanks!

According to my owners manual for my 2015 GTS, PDK in manual mode will only up-shift automatically for you IF you have the accelerator fully depressed so that the kick-down function is enabled. See attached page. Everyone did get a manual with their car, right?
