Exclamation .2 PDK Problems

Hi all,
I'm a brand new user on the site but long term lurker and wanted to let you know about a ongoing problem on the 991.2's. My own car, a 991.2 Carrera S, has been in and out of the shop since I bought it due to a "PDK issue." I have owned numerous Porsches and currently own a turbo, Macan Turbo, and I've owned over 30 Porsche's in my life. Onto the issue; A horrible noise comes from the engine when the car is in normal mode, you are driving the car following the break in(so pretty much leave it in drive and gentle on the throttle), and you will randomly hear a loud distinct noise from the engine bay. It's most noticeable when the car is in a higher gear/lower speed(lugging) itself. Another way to replicate/test your car is find a hill, start from a crawl and slowly accelerate. After numerous trips to my local dealer here on the west coast they believe it's a PDK issue and had to replace the whole PDK! Not only that but after talking with members of a local car group I found another owner of a .2 who had the exact same issue. He was told by a lead tech that it's a known issue but isn't common/every .2 car, the tech told him his was the third they have done. Also he told me PCNA gave him a generous monetary amount to stay in the car versus him lemon lawing it. His car was in over 3 times and over 15 days. My car has passed that amount and I just wanted to let others here now that their is a mechanical issue with the .2's. It really sucks right now, especially being I love my car and it really has every option I want(I didn't spec order). I'm hoping all is fixed now and this nightmare is behind me. I've learned so much from members on this forum and wanted to join to let others know about this issue. So far I've talked to four other .2 Carrera/S/4S owners. Hopefully this helps others who may be hearing a noise from the back end. Don't hesitate to PM/ask many any questions you have, hopefully I can be of some help!

Hi Brian,
First welcome to the site and thanks for the info! I actually have heard this noise as well!! I went to visit a friend, who recently bought a .2 carrera, and he is going through the same problem as you or as you did. I feel bad because this was his first Porsche and I've had numerous Porsches with no issues ever. He asked me to drive it while I was there to let him know if I ever heard anything like that on my turbo, but I've never heard anything like it. He was saying that he talked with another owner on the East Coast who had the same issue. It really was a annoying noise, kind of like a chatter that made the car sound like a old clunker and the backend may fall out. It wasn't consistent but on a 10 minute ride around his neighborhood I heard it a solid 5 times. Really disappointed for him as we been buddies since college and I recommended Porsche to him. I've had turbos/gt3's since the 996 area and I've never heard a noise like it before. I'm glad you joined and posted about it, I was actually going to start a thread myself but work has kept me busy. It really sucks for any new car owner!

No I don't have any video clips of the noise. I should have tried to get one but wasn't thinking when I drove my buddies Carrera S. I was too busy apologizing for always bragging to him how I never had any problems with my Porsches and how he should get one. I would ask him to video record it but since he had his car, I think its only been in his possession like 5 days, rest of the time at the dealer. I know he is wayyy past the lemon law period but I don't know what he will do. Just a real frustrating experience for a brand new car. I'm hoping if/when they replace the PDK it's fixed for him. I'll try to keep everyone in the loop on the outcome. Hoping for the best for him....

It is a least good that PCNA admits to and knows about the issue. Hopefully it is an easy and lasting fix, unlike a variety of other issues that PCNA will not even attempt to look into or fix or even acknowledge exists Good luck to all with this issue.

Brian:
I'm sorry you are having issues with your new 991. As someone who was forced to use the lemon law (and successfully) on a Honda, I recommend you look into your state's lemon law requirements to see what is required to be successful and document what you need to in case they can't fix yours. Your owner's manual will tell you which agency would be handling your case and they will send you program requirements.

Good luck

Chuck

Follow up on the Lemon Law reqts for your state. If you know about it and do not notify PCNA about it, you can lose your chance to follow up on it in the future. It doesn't mean you are going to go through with it, but if you don't, it can be argued that you didn't find it troubling enough. I too have had my PDK replaced, twice and used the Lemon Law. It felt terrible for doing it since this was MY car that I ordered and wanted t to be perfect, but you really need to do it.

Is the noise like a click clack sort of sound...just picked up my new car yesterday and was crawling up in the intersection and heard the rear making a click clack that sounded like transmission noise. I told my dealer...they said bring it in so it's going back next week. This is my fifth Porsche and first time I'm a little worried....issues day 2 is not a good.
