Failed AC Compressor
Failed AC Compressor
So for the past 6 months, I've had an intermittent whirring noise at low speeds. No codes thrown, just a noticeable whir sometimes at 10-35mph in the low gears. I thought perhaps I was in the early stages of a tranny or clutch failure so I just ignored it since I have extended insurance for the drivetrain and mechanical breakdowns.
Well last week, it made a very loud whir for a minute, the generator failure light popped up, and AC compressor finally failed (seized), which threw the drive belt (which I had replaced 3k miles ago due to wear). Was not a huge deal -- I was able to keep driving the car to the dealer a few miles away, where they took care of replacing the compressor and drive belt. Had it failed in warmer temps and further away from the dealer, it would certainly have needed a tow.
I know of at least one other thread that complained about this whirring noise and wasn't diagnosed so here you have it. Proceed under advisement.
