Possible 993 Purchase....need your help!!

Hey guys, I original posted asking about reliability and such of the 993. A dealership close to me got a 95 993 in with about 82K on the clock. It is very nice, inside and out, however, the engine is smoking slightly. I've been told from the Porsche service department that the engine is holding compression, but that it is in needs of some o-rings. My question to you is what should this cost? $5K? $10K? I'm assuming that if they are in there I should get all of them replaced? Also, if I am a gearhead and wouldn't mind doing the work myself, what would be involved to replace these myself?

They were originally asking $25K for the car, but have reduced it to $21K, I've bought a few other BMW's from them in the past.

Open to thoughts and opinions. Ran a carfax on the car, looks really good, but doesn't show any maintenance for the past 20,000 miles. 2 Owner car!

HELP!!!

Andy

OMG thats a steal! Buy it at $20 and run like hell. For that $$ it doesn't matter if it smokes a little. Its just valve seats and if the car doesn't burn to much oil, it could have years of life left. Plus the smoke may just be a little blow by that gets burned at start up.
To answer your Q though. $6500 +/- is what a "top end" will run you to have done. If this was any other time I would say if you don't buy it, send the info to me, thats a great deal for the miles. BUY IT!

you guys are really making me want to purchase this car -- I need to know though, is there a Bentley (like manual) like they sell for BMW's? Can I do this type of service myself?

short answer....NO, and maybe
you need the factory 964 AND 993 manuals for a "complete" workshop set (good luck with that).
If you have the mechanical aptitude for engine building then yes you can do the heads yourself..............but its best left to a Porsche pro who knows th quirks.

Buy the car man, don't wait! Thats a great deal! I was looking at cars w/30k more miles for that $$. You will be paying money worthy of learning how to work on it. If it was a trailer queen, I would say don't buy, but hell for that $$.............please.

And should you need help, Rennlist.com has answers or someone who knows the answers, to ANYTHING you could possibly ask (on the 993 board)..............right Lu?

so what's a good 993 manual to get for doing DIY maintenance on the car (i.e., oil change, filters, spark plugs, etc..)??

Get a PPI. The car sounds too cheap, especially from a dealer

the owners manual will get you thru most of that. Again, let the "search" feature on Rennlist be your friend. EVERYTHING you need is there.

But sounds like you should get a pre purchase inspection as others have suggested

I spoke with the manager of the service department this morning. He currently still has the car, so he is going to put it up on the rack for me and go over the suspension, brakes, tires, and the rest of the vehicle to let me know what he finds. I do trust this dealership - have bought several cars from them in the past - no issues at all.

Good luck with it, hope it pans out. It'd be a deal if it does. Make sure to report back!

I'm going to drive the car tomorrow - as long as I like how it drives - it's a done deal.

the service dept told me a few areas I need to focus on but it isn't anything that i am particularly that worried about after searching Rennlist and P-car.

thanks for all the help!
