RS6 vs 996TT - observations
Hi all:
Finally had a chance to test my RS6 against my Turbo on a nice deserted stretch of highway early in the morning. My buddy drove the RS6 while I was in the 996. Nice dry day.
RS6: Enhanced exhaust is very sporty. Sounds like an American muscel car. Comfortable but not too floaty. Nose heavy and understeers at the limit. Great daily driver. 450hp (5600 - 6500rpm)/415torque (1900 rpm - 5500rpm)
Turbo: The perfect driving experience just not an everyday daily driver for me. Stock.
0-60
996 pulls away from the RS6 in every gear. By fourth gear, I am at least 10 cars ahead. RS6 suffers from noticable lag starting from a standstill.
Roll at 50 mph:
RS6 does better but 996 is still convincingly faster.
RS6 leads with 996 behind:
With a 1 sec head start, the lag is eliminated from the RS6 so in this scenario, it takes 3rd gear to catch up and pass the RS6, and that is probably around 100 mph.
Clearly, the RS6 is no replacement but it comes as close as it can get to a 4-door 911 turbo.

Your observations show why street competitions do not really prove who's car is faster unless they both start exactly the same. With close cars, even a 1-second delay on flooring it can make the slower car seem much faster. However, if you have a very fast car (e.g., 2 or more seconds faster in the 1/4-mile time), you don't need to worry so much about catching the slower car.
I always like Jay Leno's comment in a Popular Mechanics interview regarding this:
"Another thing about modern cars: You get into a Corvette on a twisty road and you nail the gas and pass a Honda Accord. You just go sailing along, you get to the end of it, you stop and 2 seconds later, the Honda Accord's right there. I'm not talking ten/tenths here, but on a regular two-lane, given modern technology, there's not much difference between a high-performance car and a regular car. Not anymore."
This is even more true when the "regular" cars are not that regular anymore.

Although it really comes down to driver ability. I recall a story about a car magazine writer who was testing the new Toyota Supra (back 10 years or so ago) and he was ripping around the track.
The writer then sees a car in the rear mirror that gets larger and larger. He notices it is a Tercel and steps on it but the Tercel keeps gaining.
The Tercel finally passes him -- With Dan Gurney behind the wheel. Down 150 HP on skinny tires, Gurney kicked tail.
Something to think about

nice collection I might say, I test drove an RS6 the other day.. great car!! over the E55 anyday, it just feels better although the AMG is faster.. about the LAG is that an AUDI THING?? because I own and S6 and it does that too.. from standstill I punsh it but the car lag's then launches.. maybe audi need to look at that.. BTW i raced the RS6 with my S6.. big diffrence.. really big once the turbo kicks in!

Why I don't agree:
(1) The difference between the "fastest man in the world" and the rest of the field is < 0.01 sec.
(2) Corvette and Honda may not be that much different, but are you telling me that C-GT and Corvette are not that diff't? Or that a Mc F1 and an NSX aren't that diff't?
(3) Have we been so spoiled by college football that to be "better" than another team you have to win by (Miami Hurricane) 50 point margin?
(4) I would even argue that if cars perform similar on a two lane highway, the drivers aren't likely equal level, are limited by fears of not being on a closed track and if they get on a closed track, you tell me how anything is going to keep up with a 996 endurance-wise for more than 30 minutes?
wow, bad day and no diet pepsi, sorry.

Nice write up. I owned a S4 and Tricked it out And was thinking about Buying the RS6 and slapping on a set of Gerret turbo's custom eghaust and remaping the ecu . I would take a modded RS6 over the E55 any day. Just somthing about the turbo car that gets me.

3 month old post and how right you were!!
Thanks! Interesting, but I'm not surprised.
Pics from today.
Black 997 Carrera S vs. Audi RS6 Plus 114/999
They are about equal 0-200 km/h, the 997 is only a little little bit faster.
