mods4cars remoteTOP

I'm very seriously considering one of these units. I've seen a few posts on this board -- some positive, some negative. But mostly, I'm surprised how little I'm hearing about it. If the device works reliably, it seems like a must-have mod.

If you have one (or tore one out), can you please post up some feedback?

Thanks!

Had one on my boxster, and I miss it on the 911, even though it the top works while moving. One touch is the shiznitt, as my gal pal says whenever she drives my (hers now) Boxster.

Go to the 997 Turbo forum at Rennlist, I bought mine during the group buy there. I don't think it's closed so you might be able to get in on it, I believe we were 1 or 2 short of GB pricing.

Very interested, had never heard of this before. What are the drawbacks or criticisms? I can never understand why car makers cannot provide these desirable types of options on a large scale when they seem so simple to produce.

Full functionality thru the remote prior to starting the car is implied on their website for the Remotetop. Furthermore, they state the main feature of the Smarttop is to be able to operate the top while moving, which I can already do from the factory (I did not realize this maybe different for earlier cabs). Could you elaborate on your experience between the two products - Smarttop vs Remotetop. Do you think you received an early or defective version of the remotetop?

That does not seem to be the case for the RemoteTop from their website....

remoteTOP 996 offers plenty of customizable, useful features, in one easy to install product. This unique comfort controller can be installed by anyone with the help of our detailed installation manual. Installation requires little electronic skills and is done without cutting wires or soldering! The module comes with all wires and parts needed.
No need for extra key fobs. Everything is done with the original key remote.

The control unit was designed by our certified engineer, having years of experience on Porsche and Mercedes Benz vehicle electronics. It was developed according to all European and American (CE, FCC) directives and constitutes a state-of-the-art electronic onboard control unit. Over-voltage protection, reverse polarity protection, safety shut-off and absolutely minimal standby power drain can be taken for granted.

Unique design features only to be found in our product:
  • Ultra-low power standby mode.
  • Universal compatibility to these cars in ONE module:
    • 996 Carrera Cabriolet
    • 996 Carrera Targa
    • 996 Carrera Coupe
    • 986 Boxster

Product features:
  • Operate the soft-top and windows with your original factory-supplied remote-key, no reprogramming of the key or the car necessary. Selectable One-Touch operation which will, once started, complete the soft-top cycle automatically by itself.
  • Operate the sunroof (coupe) and windows with your original factory-supplied remote-key, no reprogramming of the key or the car necessary. Selectable One-Touch operation which will, once started, complete the cycle automatically by itself.
  • Selectable "Lock-In" feature locks the doors once you start the vehicle or start moving. In contrast to the original Porsche Lock-In feature which can only be enabled or disabled at the dealership, the remoteTOP lets you decide if you want that feature, and even better, if you have it enabled, the remoteTOP will also UNLOCK the doors when you switch the engine off. A detail the Porsche engineers seemingly forgot.
  • Selectable "Always-Arm" Mode, which will enable the passenger cabin ultra-sound motion detector alarm when the top is OPEN.
  • Comfort window control allows you to use the electric windows after you turn the ignition off. Also enables window control after you unlocked your car with the remote controller. This allows you to walk up to your car, unlock it, sit inside and IMMEDIATELY use the power-windows, no need to put the key into ignition first.
  • Bonus Feature: Audible feedback ("chirps") using the alarm horn when locking/unlocking the car by remote. (For technical reasons this feature is not guaranteed to work on all models / model years).
  • User programmable: All features can be individually enabled or disabled. Some also allow different personal preferences to be set. All settings are retained even if the car battery is disconnected.
Compatibility with smartTOP (Boxster and 996 Convertibles): The remoteTOP is a completely new and different product, is installed in a different location and offers different, additional comfort functions for an easier every-day life with your Porsche.

Boxster note: On Boxsters (non S series) the alarm and keyless entry system is not installed on all models. For the remoteTOP controller to work, keyless entry and alarm system (M534 for Europe, M535 for US models) must be present. The remoteTOP product does *not* resemble a key or remote fob, it is a computerized control unit that connects to the original alarm and keyless entry system to expand existing features and add new ones.

** 2004 models note: If you want maximum comfort and functionality, please consider to also install a smartTOP, to re-enable closing of all windows which was factory disabled by Porsche on that model.
