750hp+ clutches? my Evo Stage 3 is dead after 27k miles
i'll talk to Sharky about this tomorrow but i thought i'd see what other people are using for their 700hp+ applications.
i have 27k miles on my GT700 and the clutch is the first major thing to go. it started slipping today on a drive back from LA.
the only thing i can think is that i'm a lazy driver - when cruising in 4th, i'll just punch it instead of down-shifting. this puts more load on the clutch as it hits peak torque... it's the only bad habit i have (that i know of.)
how long (mileage) have people had high performance clutches in other cars?
i want to keep the LWFW, do the GT2 clutch assist delete, and i obviously need a clutch that can hold the power. however, i'd like it to last longer than 27k miles....
what are you using? and for how many miles?

27,000 miles on (1) clutch in a high performance car Chuck?
Are you kidding me?? Most of us would be happy with 15,000 miles on a clutch (combined with high horsepower and agressive driving/events).
Good luck!

hey chuck, was just going to say, for the severe style of driving (somewhere between me and james hehe) that's actually quite good! I'd almost say I'm impressed considering you live in SF
I think as you are saying it'd be the perfect time to get the power-assist delete kit and make engaging easier. Will drop you an Email shortly...

thanks Woodster (and Sharky) - the kevlar clutch in my Supra lasted over 75k miles (pushing about 550hp) so that's my only real point of comparison.
what are you using Woodster?

Was that a multi-disc? Also I know from the supras they don't have the janky hydraulic assist!
Roughly how much does it cost to replace the clutch in these cars? It looks like one of the more likely things I would need to replace on a modded TT and I'm looking to buy (most likely modded up to GT700 but not beyond) this spring.
Chuck,
I am using the fairly common GT3RS Sachs Pressure Plate and
Clutch Disc. After talking to Todd Knighton about MY needs, I decided against
a ltwt flywheel, however I may try one next time. The Tilton Monster Clutches
can be a bit finicky and problematic so I stayed away (ala; Markski, VR Alex, etc).
I wonder what Divexxtreme is running in his car?? Or JoeTwint ?

Yes, I agree with Marty, stay away from the Tilton, I had one in my GT700, it was horrible, I spent $6K on the Tilton tripple disk clutch set-up and now it is sitting on my garage floor
I have a very similar setup to Marty..I went back to a dual mass, way nicer imo...I am not a fan of the lwfw anyway!

I have the sachs "999" pressure plate with the GT2 disk, DMF and non-assist conversion. I love it and the pedal feel is exactly what I was hoping for...however, after one season and 15,000 miles, I noticed slippage on the first cold morning this fall. As it is, if the temps are above 50, I do not have any slippage. 40's and below, I get a slight slippage when the boost comes on. It only slips for about 500 RPM's and it catches itself, but it's there. I am going to send the Pressure plate to Clutchmasters (they have a lot of Porsche/Sachs experience and are very knowledgeable) and for $275 they are going to heat treat it and increase the clamp force by 40 percent. From what I have been told, this will cure the problem. If I were to have known about this mod last year, I definitely would have done the heat treatment to the PP prior to the initial installation. For anyone going to the 700 level with a Sachs PP, I would strongly recommend that you do this upgrade to the PP prior to installation. The Sachs PP is good to 650HP and marginal at 700 - the heat treated PP will hold the K24/20's at very high boost.
Chuck, Did you have the heat treated Sachs PP from EVO?

Tilton is going to be releasing a 996TT clutch made very similar to the Supra style triple carbon that everyone uses. Mine should be finished and shipping today or tomorrow. I'll be installing it with my K24/18G setup in the next month or two and should be able to post results. I believe Switzer had a similar setup custom done but have only seen pictures of it, not sure whose car it went into.
I had this same clutch in my Supra and loved it, I've driven with it in 400hp cars/ 800hp cars and 1100hp cars and it's always worked awesome. Hopefully the same feel will translate, if you can get past the noise it makes that is (which doesn't bother me).

Looking it up, sounds like you had a Tilton clutch pack (which there are many variations of ) mated up to an aftermarket flywheel and assembly. I've had more than great results as have many with Tilton packages for other cars, I'm sure their official offering will have similar results.
Don't mean to hijack-- what was the spec of this system and what were the problems?
