996 Turbo / GT2 Turbo discussion on previous model 2000-2005 Porsche 911 Twin Turbo and 911 GT2.

Any internal differences between 996TT and 997TT engines?

I have never taken apart a 997tt motor, however if history is any lesson there are differences that would prevent direct substituting of certain parts. I have seen this with the 996tt, GT3, CUP and RSR.

Jaime, I will be the first to admit I do not know much about standalones. The only ones I was ever familiar with were the DFI and F.A.S.T. sytems running the Turbo Buicks back in the day. I am sure the technology has improved immeasurably, but how is this guy going to overcome some basic issues with the 996TT engine. What happens to the Variable Cam Advance and the Variable Cam Lift. As far as I know even Motec cannot control those features. What about knock sensing as well? Even the Motronic with full Knock control has a hard time reacting fast enough on high HP, high PSI engines. Again, will this standalone have knock sensing, because if it doesnt it sure can get ugly for a turbo motor. Look forward to seeing the system

Go take a peek at the motec catalog and check the options on the m800/m880 it is capable with regard to varaible valve timing, electronic throttle control. Not sure about varaible valve lift though. As to knock there is always a J&S unit that has been used on 911s before. One thing to keep in mind is that "knock sensing" does not prevent it, it just reduces its persistence. Generally a safe tune is used that has a healthy margin with regard to knock.

Standalones have come along way since then. Even AEM is light years better than F.A.S.T. I'm not able to give any details out yet, but I can say it won't cost anything close to a Motec M800 and in many ways, is much more advanced. Tym has it running on a 997tt right now and so far so good. He has picked up 30-40 whp even running stock parameters. I'll be running it on my S4 in a few months and maybe Z06 too.

Tym is probably going to kill me for even saying this much, so stay tuned and look for a quiet launch on a few cars in the next couple months. It'll be the first really exciting development in quite some time for the 996/997 platforms!!!

Good Stuff Coming from these guys!

Tym works closely with Todd Knighton and it sounds like there will be more
interesting stuff rolling off from dynos real soon. For starters, a 997TT with
a couple of Large Garret BB turbos, etc...

Sounds awesome!

Oh, Rob, thanks for the compliments. She can't run w/ the big dogs (hangs w/ a stock GT2, however) but my M3 is the ultimate dd...I love her.

Oh, and we didn't get arrested today while playing "in Mexico" the off-duty officer in the Jeep was calling us into his on duty friends, but by then we were all doing 65.
they do this **** to us in Akron, OH all the time...... I77 is a ***** on sundays

997 is about ready if not ready i think, he has mine done and increased the curve by alot on initial testing he was basing from my 9ff flash. his curve with the standalone was so much stronger, i will see if i can get the charts to post. Now its time for him to do the package and finish up my E85 Green car lolol hopefully i get my blacked out housings back from evodave soon so i can post those too!

Not that I'm aware of. I swapped my Proto exhaust for Switzer's before I sold it - a pic is below. It was gorgeous in person, especially after we coated it in black. It sounded awesome too! Titan and Proto both resell his exhausts. Tym is not a sponsor, so he has mentioned nothing about them online. They seem to sell mostly by word of mouth. But to give you an additional sense of his quality, he has been building exhausts exclusively for Renntech for some time now. Tym maintains even a lower key reputation than Todd K.

Wow that exhaust looks gorgeous!

I'm interested to hear about this stand alone setup. I may know a person looking for something like that sooner or later!
