Any internal differences between 996TT and 997TT engines?
Any internal differences between 996TT and 997TT engines?
So are there any differences internally at all? Pistons, rods, studs, any design features? The reason I ask is that there are a number of 700hp kits starting to pop up for the 997TT, yet they don't require any internal engine mods (rods, studs, etc). What's the reason for this, because the general consensus on here is that the 996TT is good to about 650hp (crank) before you have to dive into the engine.
Thanks
Thanks
better engine mgmnt is one of the reasons. do the 997tt have the rms problems like the 6and7GT3? the 996tt still seems like the iron horse. rare to have problems like the other GT1 variants.
yah, dont really see any reason to ever upgrade to a 997tt. Not much really changed, and since we all upgraded suspensions, programming etc., it seems like a stock 997tt would be a step down, to a "dumbed-down" american version pcar.
You've got to go through so much to pull out the original european qualities of the pcar after you buy it, that it just seems like a lot of work to not get much upside.

Local high end shop in Cleveland. Tym used to run, build and tune all of Buschur's record setting DSM's/Evo's until he left to do his own thing a few years ago. Still sometimes works on higher hp Evo's but transitioned his business towards the Merc and Porsche market. Nobody on the board fabs anywhere close to Tym's ability. He did my black exhaust awhile back, it looked nicer than OEM. He became a Proto dealer recently but also does a lot of cool, new stuff on his own. He is coming out with a killer, inexpensive stand alone later this year which will completely change the Porsche tuning market.

WOW!! I have always wondered why someone has not actually developed a standalone for the Porsche's. Actually, it has been explained to me that the Germans have been incredibly good at guarding their codes, but it is about time.
Sounds awesome!
Oh, Rob, thanks for the compliments. She can't run w/ the big dogs (hangs w/ a stock GT2, however) but my M3 is the ultimate dd...I love her.
Oh, and we didn't get arrested today while playing "in Mexico" the off-duty officer in the Jeep was calling us into his on duty friends, but by then we were all doing 65.
Yeah, I know Tym from back in the DSM days. Real stand-up guy, and I can't wait to hear more about his stand-alone (which he has running at the moment in one of his cars). If what he did with Buschur is any indication, the Porsche world is about to be turned on it's head.
No ideas on the internal differences from anyone who's actually been inside of each? Tuners?

I was over at GMG a while back talking to Fabryce and he stated that the internals are the same. I think that may have been a generalization though, as the compression ratio for the 996TT is 9.4:1 while the 997TT is listed as 9.0:1. As others noted above, this would explain the ability to run higher boost pressures.
Disclaimer: the above compression ratio data is from the internet, and so may be incorrect. That said, those numbers were consistent across several sources, so I'd expect they are probably accurate.
